Axcelis Invests $35 Million in South Korea Equipment Plant
The Massachusetts-based toolmaker will construct a 200,000-square-foot facility in Pyeongtaek to supply ion implanters directly to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix memory fabs.
Axcelis Technologies finalized plans on Sept. 9 to build a $35 million ion implantation equipment plant in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, expanding its sole manufacturing base outside the United States.
The planned facility will encompass roughly 200,000 square feet of gross floor area. That represents more than a fourfold expansion over the company's existing 44,000-square-foot Asian manufacturing site in the same city.
The capital commitment funds cleanroom spaces built to Class 1,000 and Class 10,000 standards, integrated warehouse bays and an on-site training center, according to company disclosures.
Ion implantation — the front-end process that injects charged dopant atoms into silicon wafers to alter electrical conductivity — is essential for defining transistors in high-density DRAM and 3D NAND memory chips.
Axcelis supplies its Purion series implanters to global chipmakers, competing primarily with Applied Materials in high-current, medium-current and high-energy ion beam platforms.
Samsung Electronics operates six mega-fabs at its Pyeongtaek campus, located less than 20 kilometers from the Axcelis site. The proximity enables rapid delivery of sub-assemblies and direct engineering support.

Memory transitions are driving higher demand for implantation precision. 3D NAND stacks surpassing 300 layers and sub-10-nanometer DRAM nodes require ultra-high-energy ion beams to penetrate deep structural trenches without distorting crystal lattices.
Axcelis plans to use the Korean site to train regional fab technicians and field service engineers, reducing tool downtime for customer cleanrooms during critical production ramps.
South Korea's trade ministry offers cash grants, infrastructure support and local tax reductions for foreign direct investment in core semiconductor materials, parts and equipment categories.
Axcelis has scheduled a formal groundbreaking ceremony in Pyeongtaek for Oct. 20, 2026. Commercial tool assembly and system shipments are slated to commence in the second half of 2028.
The company has not published the specific industrial plot within Pyeongtaek for the facility, and Axcelis did not file a separate Form 8-K disclosure with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The project will proceed under South Korea's Foreign Investment Promotion Act as regional fab operators prepare next-generation memory capacity for artificial intelligence hardware clusters.
