AI and automation policy
We use AI tools in our newsroom. Here is exactly where, and what a human remains responsible for.
What AI does here
East Asia Brief uses large language models to help extract facts from primary source documents, to draft English text from those verified facts, to suggest headlines, and to produce illustrative images. Story selection, source verification, editing and the decision to publish are made by people.
What a human is accountable for
Every briefing is reviewed by a named editor before it goes live. That review covers figures and dates against the source document, the fairness of the framing, the headline, the impact map, and the caption on every image. A byline means a person stands behind it.
Images
Illustrative images generated by AI are labeled as AI-generated in the caption and carry a visible badge. We do not present a generated image as a photograph of a real event, and we do not generate likenesses of real, identifiable people.
What we do not do
- We do not publish machine-written text without human review.
- We do not machine-translate another outlet's article and publish the result.
- We do not invent quotes, sources, filings or figures. Every number traces to a document.
- We do not auto-publish allegations, sanctions, investigations or anything naming an individual negatively.
- We do not use AI to fabricate a reporter. Bylines belong to real people on our masthead.
On scaled content
Producing many pages cheaply is not our objective and would not serve our readers. Our value is in verification against primary sources and in the relationships we map between companies, policies and supply chains. Volume without that work is worth nothing to a reader deciding where to put capital or where to source a component.

We want this reporting to be findable and citable. Every briefing is available as clean Markdown by appending .md to its URL or sending Accept: text/markdown. There is a machine-readable index at /llms.txt, structured records at /api/articles.json, and our crawling terms are in /robots.txt.
