BYD brings Denza Z9 GT luxury EV to India under 100% tariff

Priced between 12 million and 15 million rupees, the model tests high-end buyers after Indian authorities rejected the automaker's $1 billion factory joint venture.

BYD completed uncamouflaged road validation of its Denza Z9 GT shooting brake in India on Nov. 7, 2026, ahead of an official launch next week.

The five-seat electric vehicle will arrive as a completely built-up import subject to India's 100% customs tariff on passenger cars with a cost, insurance and freight value above $40,000.

Expected ex-showroom pricing between 12 million and 15 million rupees ($144,000 to $180,000) places the model in a high-end bracket that generates less than 1% of India's annual passenger car sales.

The luxury push follows the Indian government's rejection of a $1 billion manufacturing joint venture proposed by BYD and Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures.

Indian authorities withheld approval under Press Note 3 of 2020, which mandates inter-ministerial security clearance for foreign direct investment from nations sharing a land border.

That restriction prevents BYD from building assembly lines in India, forcing the Shenzhen-based automaker to rely entirely on trade channels to expand its product footprint.

India introduced a concessional 15% import tariff in March 2024 under its Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars.

That concession requires automakers to commit at least 41.5 billion rupees ($500 million) to local manufacturing within three years while achieving 50% domestic value addition within five years.

Because regulatory scrutiny blocks BYD from making qualifying capital investments, the company cannot access the 15% rate and must absorb standard customs levies.

The high landed cost pushes the brand toward premium buyers where price sensitivity is lower and gross margins can absorb import duties.

Rajeev Chauhan, vice president of electric passenger vehicles at BYD India, confirmed the model will arrive with global feature parity rather than de-contented hardware.

The India-spec Z9 GT retains an e4 tri-motor powertrain generating 850 kilowatts, or 1,156 metric horsepower, powered by a 122.5-kilowatt-hour Blade battery.

The shooting brake measures 5,180 millimeters in length, 1,990 millimeters in width and 1,490 millimeters in height on a 3,125-millimeter wheelbase.

The car uses rear-wheel steering and an integrated air suspension system designed to maneuver its 2.9-metric-ton curb weight through narrow urban corridors.

BYD established initial brand recognition in India through its Atto 3 sport utility vehicle, e6 multi-purpose vehicle and Seal performance sedan.

Those vehicles gave BYD an operational retail and charging presence in major metropolitan areas including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

The Denza deployment shifts competitive pressure directly onto German luxury incumbents that currently dominate India's executive vehicle registrations.

BMW retails its i5 M60 xDrive electric sedan in India at roughly 12 million rupees ($144,000), producing 601 horsepower from an 81.2-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

The Z9 GT enters that price band offering nearly double the power output and a substantially larger battery capacity.

BYD plans to retail Denza models through dedicated showroom spaces to distinguish the luxury marquee from its mainstream vehicle line.

The company also plans to introduce the Denza D9 multi-purpose vehicle to target chauffeur-driven corporate buyers in Mumbai and New Delhi.

BYD has not disclosed the initial shipment quota allocated to Indian dealerships or confirmed whether digital side mirrors will obtain Indian homologation.

The carmaker will conduct the formal commercial launch and price reveal for the Denza brand in India on Nov. 13, 2026.
