Harmonic Drive pitches integrated robot actuators for 2026
The motion specialist targets humanoid and cobot makers with gear-motor units as its parent company projects ¥68.0 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue amid rising factory automation.
Harmonic Drive scheduled an industry address on Oct. 7, 2026, outlining how integrated actuators cut robotic design cycles and cabling overhead. The presentation targets engineers developing collaborative and humanoid robots.
The presentation addresses motion architecture at RoboBusiness 2026 in Santa Clara, California. Harmonic Drive application engineer Marcel Almonte will present the engineering case on Oct. 20, 2026.
Parent company Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. forecasts consolidated net sales of ¥68.0 billion ($450 million) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. Operating profit will reach ¥6.2 billion, according to company financial disclosures.
The company produces strain wave gears — compact gearsets that produce high torque with near-zero backlash. Demand for these precision speed reducers tracks global robot manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication equipment.
Robot builders traditionally buy speed reducers, frameless servomotors, optical encoders and motion drives from different suppliers. Engineers then align and wire those parts inside joint housings, extending product prototyping schedules.
Integrated actuators combine all four elements into a sealed, pre-calibrated housing. This unified package eliminates mechanical couplers and shared mounting flanges, removing several assembly steps on factory floors.
The mechanical package combines a strain wave gear, a brushless motor, dual encoders and a servo drive. One encoder tracks motor velocity, while the second monitors final output shaft position directly.
Wiring reduction represents a primary advantage for multi-axis robot developers. Discrete multi-joint arms require thick cable bundles passing through hollow joint axes, creating bending fatigue and intermittent failures.
Integrated designs collapse complex cable runs into a four-wire bus architecture carrying direct-current power and EtherCAT or CANopen industrial communications. That architecture shrinks harness volume across tight joint spaces.
Weight savings carry immediate operational benefits in mobile manipulation. Every gram removed from a robot wrist or forearm reduces the payload torque required from shoulder and elbow joints.
Lighter joint structures allow robot makers to run smaller upstream motors. That dynamic lowers overall arm weight, extends battery life in mobile robots and increases payload margins.
Procurement teams also shorten component purchasing timelines. Sourcing unified actuators replaces separate delivery lead times across motor windings, digital encoders, drive controllers and precision gear sets.
Harmonic Drive has supplied integrated units for multiple years rather than introducing an unannounced platform. German unit Harmonic Drive SE launched its commercial Intelligent Hollow Shaft Drive line on June 1, 2022.
North American subsidiary Harmonic Drive LLC supplies related all-in-one products through its RSF-5B and LPA drive series. The company framed the Oct. 7 announcement as a design framework session rather than a hardware release.
Tokyo-listed Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. moved its trading listing to the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Feb. 27, 2026. The company targets return on equity above 10% in its long-term plan.
The Japanese parent company announced on Sept. 10 that its research director Shizuka Yada presented motion control strategies at a robotics forum in Tokyo. That appearance focused on Physical AI hardware integration.
The notice does not state whether Harmonic Drive plans to release a new physical actuator family, and the company published no product filing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Oct. 7, 2026.
Harmonic Drive will deliver the technical session in Santa Clara on Oct. 20, 2026. The Japanese parent begins shipping updated firmware for its HA-900A driver series in late October 2026.
