Sebang Lithium Battery readies Ohio pack plant for US supply

The $144 million Jeffersonville facility will supply grid-scale storage modules to LG Energy Solution under a 1.8 trillion won deal, meeting strict U.S. clean energy rules.

Sebang Lithium Battery completed final preparations on Oct. 31, 2026, to begin commercial shipments of battery packs and energy storage modules from its first U.S. plant in Jeffersonville, Ohio.

The $144 million facility will manufacture energy storage system modules—racks that combine multiple cells within a protective casing—and automotive battery packs. It creates 443 jobs representing $37.1 million in annual payroll.

Sebang Lithium Battery committed 150 billion won ($110 million) in total capital expenditure for the site. That investment underpins a 1.8 trillion won ($1.3 billion) supply contract with LG Energy Solution running through 2028.

The contract assigns Sebang Lithium Battery to assemble battery modules for JF2 Link, a containerized lithium iron phosphate storage system designed by LG Energy Solution. The units serve electric utilities and artificial intelligence data centers.

Demand for local battery pack assembly expanded after U.S. trade rules penalized foreign cell content. Grid operators face rising tariffs on Chinese energy storage equipment, driving domestic utilities toward localized supply chains.

Sebang Global Battery, the parent company that holds a 42% share of South Korea's automotive battery market, funded the expansion through its U.S. holding unit. The board approved the cross-border investment on June 12, 2026, according to regulatory filings.

The parent company injected 106.89 billion won ($70 million) into Sebang Lithium Battery America. That equity transfer equaled 4.77% of Sebang Global Battery's consolidated assets of 2.24 trillion won reported at the end of 2025.

Sebang Group Chairman Lee Sang-woong and Senior Vice President Lee Won-seop took direct personal equity stakes during the funding round. Their participation secured family-level backing for the group's transition away from traditional lead-acid batteries.

LG Energy Solution turned to Sebang Lithium Battery after unexpected disruptions fractured its existing vendor network. Pouch-cell module partner People Works declined to expand production lines in Illinois and Arizona due to internal operational constraints.

Tooling vendor Daejin Machinery filed for court rehabilitation in March 2026 following a default in December 2025. The collapse stemmed from an unpaid $22.43 million construction dispute at the nearby L-H Battery Company plant in Ohio.

L-H Battery Company is a joint venture between Honda Motor and LG Energy Solution. Subcontractor Central Conveyor filed a federal lawsuit over unpaid work on five production lines, paralyzing tooling deliveries across the region.

LG Energy Solution reorganized its supplier roster to protect delivery schedules for grid customers. The cell maker transferred module assembly tooling contracts to HyVISION System to equip Sebang Lithium Battery's Ohio assembly lines.

HyVISION System disclosed a 95 billion won ($70 million) equipment contract to build automated module assembly lines for the Jeffersonville facility. That single deal accounted for 55.52% of the equipment builder's consolidated revenue in 2025.

The Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved state assistance on Sept. 28, 2026, granting Sebang Lithium Battery Ohio LLC a 10-year Job Creation Tax Credit set at 2.003%. The incentive carries an estimated financial value of $8 million.

The state tax incentive requires Sebang Lithium Battery to meet strict employment targets in Fayette County. The company must generate the full $37.1 million in payroll across 443 full-time positions before Dec. 31, 2029, to retain the benefit.

The Jeffersonville site sits within freight trucking distance of major Midwest vehicle assembly plants and regional power substations. Proximity reduces shipping risks for heavy, hazardous battery packs that require specialized logistics.

Packaging specialists like Sebang Lithium Battery provide the engineering layer between raw cell producers and system integrators. Battery modules require integrated battery management system software, cooling plates and high-voltage wiring harnesses to operate safely.

The Inflation Reduction Act offers domestic manufacturing credits under Section 45X, providing $10 per kilowatt-hour for battery modules produced in the United States. That subsidy offsets higher initial labor and utility expenses in North America.

Korean battery manufacturers are shifting idle electric vehicle battery lines toward grid storage applications as electric car sales growth cools. South Korea's three major cell producers seek long-term off-take agreements with U.S. utility developers.

Sebang Lithium Battery projects annual revenue from the Ohio operation will reach 800 billion won once volume manufacturing stabilizes. Cumulative order backlog from LG Energy Solution is scheduled to reach 1.8 trillion won by the end of 2028.

Sebang Global Battery has not published customer delivery schedules or disclosed whether non-ESS automotive pack buyers have signed firm supply contracts for the Jeffersonville site. The company also declined to disclose initial daily module output.

Sebang Lithium Battery will complete the final administrative capital transfer of 106.89 billion won to the Ohio operating company by Dec. 31, 2026. Commercial deliveries to North American grid projects will scale across the first quarter of 2027.
