LG Energy Solution shifts ESS tool orders as supplier defaults
The battery maker reallocated module assembly contracts to SYSTEM R&D and HyVISION SYSTEM following a $22.43 million default by Daejin Machinery.
LG Energy Solution restructured its energy storage system production equipment supply chain on Oct. 9, 2026, reallocating key assembly orders after primary manufacturing partner Daejin Machinery defaulted on construction liabilities.
The South Korean cell maker is expanding grid-scale energy storage lines in North America to offset slowing global electric vehicle sales. Assembly tools package individual cells into containerized utility modules.
The overhaul follows Daejin Machinery accumulating roughly $22.43 million in unpaid contractor fees at a joint venture site in the United States, representing the supplier's entire working capital base before court receivership.
Daejin Machinery had served as a primary engineering partner for LG Electronics' Production Engineering Research Institute. The vendor built automated module lines, pack assembly systems and degassing machines for pouch-type batteries.
The tooling contractor entered severe liquidity distress during late 2025 as overseas installation costs mounted. A local construction contractor filed suit in Ohio federal court over unpaid work at L-H Battery Company.
L-H Battery Company is the $4.4 billion joint venture established between LG Energy Solution and Honda Motor. Unpaid invoices on the site triggered payment freezes across Daejin Machinery's domestic subcontracting network in South Korea.
South Korean credit authorities declared Daejin Machinery in final default in December 2025. The Incheon District Court approved the initiation of corporate rehabilitation proceedings in March 2026 to restructure its liabilities.
The insolvency disrupted tool delivery schedules across LG Energy Solution's North American energy storage expansion projects. Pouch cell lines require specialized automated handling to bundle delicate flat cells into reinforced high-voltage modules.
LG Energy Solution reassigned critical module manufacturing contracts to SYSTEM R&D to prevent commissioning delays. The automation engineering specialist builds precision battery packaging machinery and industrial curing equipment in South Korea.
SYSTEM R&D absorbed the assembly orders previously assigned to Daejin Machinery, according to people familiar with the transaction. The supplier already maintains long-standing equipment integration contracts with LG Display and Hyundai Mobis.
LG Energy Solution simultaneously widened equipment orders with HyVISION SYSTEM for large-scale container modules. HyVISION SYSTEM supplies automated vision inspection systems and robotic module assembly hardware for energy storage system production.
The supplier previously partnered with module assembler People Works to furnish containerized storage equipment. People Works declined additional production expansion requests in North America earlier this year due to internal capital constraints.
Sebang Lithium Battery stepped into the container packaging role through a 1.8 trillion won ($1.3 billion) supply agreement. Sebang Lithium Battery is building a dedicated module plant in Ohio to support LG Energy Solution.
HyVISION SYSTEM will supply the primary automated assembly tooling for the Ohio facility. The facility will assemble battery modules for the JF2 Link, a high-capacity utility storage unit deployed across electrical grids.
Procurement teams at LG Energy Solution have also opened discussions with equipment manufacturers outside their historical captive network. The battery maker contacted automated assembly vendors that traditionally supply domestic rivals Samsung SDI and SK On.
LG Energy Solution established formal institutional safeguards in May 2026 to prevent future equipment transfer bottlenecks. The company signed a mutual growth partnership pact introducing a technology data escrow system with Tier 1 suppliers.
The escrow framework deposits proprietary equipment blueprints and control software with a state-designated trustee. If a contracted equipment manufacturer faces bankruptcy, LG Energy Solution retains legal rights to transfer blueprints to alternative builders.
LG Energy Solution aims to expand annual energy storage production capacity beyond 50 gigawatt-hours in North America by late 2026. The company converted existing vehicle cell lines at its Ultium Cells facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
The Tennessee plant began mass production of lithium iron phosphate storage cells in July after a $70 million line conversion. Meeting manufacturing schedules requires seamless coordination between cell production and external module packaging lines.
LG Energy Solution has not published line-item procurement values for the reallocated equipment contracts. The battery maker has also not officially confirmed the identities of the rival suppliers contacted during the recent procurement review.
The court overseeing Daejin Machinery has set a November 2026 deadline for creditors to review the supplier's formal rehabilitation plan. LG Energy Solution expects newly installed assembly lines to reach full qualification ahead of scheduled 2027 deliveries.
