LG Energy Solution Faces Lawsuit Over Michigan Battery Plant Blast

A contractor injured in a September pipeline explosion filed claims exceeding $75,000 in Michigan, citing protocol violations during factory line modifications.

LG Energy Solution Michigan faced a civil damages lawsuit on Oct. 30, 2026, after a high-pressure pipeline ruptured at its Holland battery facility and injured an engineering contractor.

The complaint in Ottawa County Circuit Court targets the South Korean cell maker as it expands the site to 25 gigawatt-hours of annual manufacturing capacity. That expansion represents a $1.7 billion capital commitment.

The plaintiff, Dong-won Park, filed the action alongside his family following an industrial accident on the afternoon of Sept. 23. He is seeking compensatory damages exceeding the court's $75,000 jurisdictional threshold.

Park worked as an employee of South Korean contractor IBG Construction. He traveled to the United States on Aug. 1 under a B-1 business visa.

The court filing states his role remained strictly limited to engineering coordination, project oversight and technical consultations. Park was legally prohibited from performing physical construction labor.

The incident took place during modification work on Production Line 4 at the Holland facility. Foremen were conducting leak detection procedures on high-pressure fluid lines, according to court documents.

The complaint alleges that two on-site foremen breached fundamental safety protocols. Personnel opened three pressurized valves simultaneously instead of executing sequential checks, the filing states.

The improper valve sequence triggered a hydraulic pipeline rupture. The resulting explosion threw metal components and high-pressure fluid across the immediate work zone.

Park sustained catastrophic injuries from the blast impact. The complaint details traumatic brain injury, multiple facial fractures, cognitive impairment and severe physical disfigurement.

The lawsuit names LG Energy Solution Michigan and two site supervisors as defendants. It asserts counts of gross negligence and premises liability under Michigan state law.

South Korean battery manufacturers have accelerated North American capital spending under federal subsidy rules. Rapid line commissioning has repeatedly tested site management and local contractor safety controls.

The Holland campus has recorded several serious workplace safety incidents over the past three years. Those events have brought heightened oversight from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

A separate contractor died at the Holland complex on July 27, 2025. The worker was crushed when automated equipment engaged during machinery setup, according to state regulatory findings.

State regulators cited the Michigan operating subsidiary for workplace violations following that fatality. LG Energy Solution Michigan filed an administrative appeal contesting those penalties in September 2026.

An earlier fatality occurred at the facility in September 2023. That incident similarly involved pressure testing procedures on plant piping systems.

A hazardous chemical solvent release evacuated sections of the Holland factory on Sept. 6, 2025. Emergency medical personnel transported more than 15 workers to regional hospitals for toxic exposure.

Federal and state agencies have tightened enforcement across electric vehicle manufacturing hubs. Regulators are scrutinizing cleanroom piping, high-voltage battery formation zones and automated handling systems.

Industrial plants must follow strict lock-out and tag-out isolation rules during line modification. Pipe testing requires mechanical pressure relief devices and physical perimeter barriers before pressurization begins.

Managing South Korean engineering dispatches has also become a critical operational hurdle. Battery producers rely on home-country technical personnel to supervise tooling setup across North American joint ventures.

Dispatched technicians face strict visa restrictions that bar direct manual assembly work. Operational gray zones emerge when engineering supervisors oversee local trade contractors under compressed factory timelines.

The Michigan subsidiary faces an initial court deadline of Nov. 3, 2026, to file its response to the complaint. Legal counsel will determine whether to challenge the jurisdiction or move for settlement talks.

The complaint does not state whether state regulators opened an independent inspection into the September line failure. LG Energy Solution has not published any public disclosure or statement regarding the Ottawa County lawsuit.
