Dongfeng and CATL expand alliance across batteries and energy networks
The state automaker and the world's largest battery producer agreed Oct. 30, 2026, to integrate vehicle architecture, battery swapping and fast charging.
Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited announced an expanded groupwide partnership Oct. 30, 2026, to integrate cell manufacturing, vehicle design and public energy infrastructure.
The agreement consolidates scattered subsidiary-level pacts into a single corporate alliance. The companies did not disclose a transaction value, but CATL operates more than 700 battery swap stations across 39 cities in China that will support the unified network.
The framework establishes joint engineering across passenger and commercial vehicle platforms. It links Dongfeng chassis architecture directly to CATL battery swapping and ultra-fast charging hardware.
Dongfeng Motor Chairman Yang Qing and CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun signed the pact Oct. 29 in Wuhan. Dongfeng General Manager Feng Changjun and CATL Co-President of Market Systems Yang Jun attended the signing ceremony.
Automotive competition has moved beyond standalone vehicle manufacturing, Yang said. Carmakers and battery producers must merge supply chains into full value chains that include after-sales power management, Yang said.
The alliance will coordinate technology rollouts through China's 15th Five-Year Plan period. The state economic blueprint begins in 2026 and prioritizes commercial charging standardization alongside heavy-transport electrification.
Under the Wuhan agreement, the two groups will build an operational ecosystem covering batteries, vehicles and energy services. The scope covers ultra-fast charging, pack swapping, overseas expansion and joint brand marketing.
The technical pipeline focuses on deploying high-rate fast-charging cells across Dongfeng vehicle lines. The rollout targets premium passenger marque Voyah, off-road brand Mengshi and electric-sedan unit Yijing.
These vehicle brands will prioritize CATL cells capable of 10C charging rates. A 10C multiplier allows an electric vehicle battery to recharge in roughly six minutes under optimal electrical loads.
The groups will also establish standardized battery-swapping modules across both passenger cars and commercial trucks. CATL stations currently swap passenger vehicle packs within 100 seconds.
Dongfeng and CATL have conducted supply relationships through successive national planning cycles. The companies established joint venture Dongfeng CATL (Wuhan) Battery System Co., Ltd. in July 2018 under equal 50% ownership stakes.
That venture focused on battery-pack assembly. Since 2024, the relationship expanded into fragmented, brand-by-brand commercial arrangements with separate operational targets.
Mengshi signed a three-year strategic supply agreement with CATL on Jan. 3, 2024. Joint venture Dongfeng Nissan executed a technical development agreement with the battery supplier in May 2025.
Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle followed with a five-year pact on Oct. 13, 2025. That contract focused on swapping systems for heavy logistics tractors operating at regional freight hubs.
Voyah signed a 10-year cooperation agreement with CATL on Dec. 17, 2025. The premium marque used CATL Bedrock skateboard chassis engineering to support drive-by-wire controls.
Voyah delivered 134,352 vehicles from January to November 2025, an 82.6% increase over the previous year. CATL supplied the primary battery systems for that passenger vehicle volume.
Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor added another five-year agreement on Aug. 18, 2026. That contract covered heavy-duty cargo tractors, dump trucks and commercial battery leasing platforms.
The new Wuhan pact pulls these separate brand contracts under a unified group umbrella. The consolidation lets Dongfeng standardize components and purchasing terms across all assembly subsidiaries.
For CATL, groupwide integration locks in battery volume across one of China's largest state automotive builders. The pact also secures vehicle demand for its proprietary swap infrastructure.
The vertical structure challenges independent battery suppliers and charging operators. Automakers without dedicated cell partners face higher engineering hurdles when designing custom chassis platforms.
South Korean cell producers face tighter exclusion from Chinese state assembly fleets. LG Energy Solution and SK On do not maintain equivalent joint platform alliances with Chinese state automotive groups.
Japanese assemblers operating Chinese joint ventures face parallel pressures. Dongfeng joint ventures with Nissan and Honda are reorienting toward Chinese battery architectures to preserve local market share.
The companies plan to establish joint overseas marketing networks, Zeng said. The export cooperation aims to support Dongfeng commercial trucks and electric passenger cars entering European and Southeast Asian ports.
The cooperation documents do not state the total capital expenditure or equity commitments behind the alliance. Dongfeng has not published the duration of the master agreement.
The earliest of the underlying subsidiary agreements, the three-year Mengshi contract, reaches its renewal window in January 2027. China's industrial ministries review public charging and battery-swap standards in Beijing in December 2026.
