CATL expands Hungary battery workforce for local EV supply

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited is adding staff at its €7.34 billion Debrecen site after starting trial cell production, targeting 2,300 local workers to supply German automakers.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited accelerated operational hiring at its Debrecen manufacturing complex on Oct. 2, 2026, preparing technical crews to scale battery cell deliveries for European electric vehicle makers.

The Chinese battery manufacturer committed €7.34 billion ($8.1 billion) to build the 221-hectare complex in eastern Hungary. The plant will reach 100 gigawatt-hours of annual cell capacity at full build-out.

That production capacity makes Debrecen Europe's largest planned battery manufacturing site. The facility represents CATL's second European cell base after its 14-gigawatt-hour operational plant in Erfurt, Germany.

Headcount at the Hungarian manufacturing site reached roughly 1,470 workers in July. CATL is expanding that local workforce to 2,300 employees by the end of December, according to company staffing targets.

The recruitment drive follows the launch of trial cell production on Sept. 22. Technicians activated the facility's first two automated manufacturing lines to calibrate machinery ahead of full series output.

Trial operations focus on setting up, optimizing and validating cleanroom production equipment and chemical processes. CATL Debrecen completed all regulatory preconditions required under its operating authorization before activating the lines, the company said.

The Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office issued an occupancy permit for the first cell building in August. Regulators granted that authorization after inspectors verified compliance with Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control standards.

County inspectors conducted on-site reviews of the site's environmental protection systems prior to granting the permit. Authority representatives confirmed that CATL eliminated previously identified technical deficiencies before trial manufacturing began.

The Debrecen site has assembled battery modules since autumn 2024. Factory crews produced a cumulative 537,000 battery modules from three dedicated assembly lines before cell operations commenced.

Local cell manufacturing will supply European carmakers from Hungarian assembly lines. The production complex sits adjacent to BMW's vehicle assembly plant in the Southern Industrial Park of Debrecen.

BMW selected CATL to manufacture next-generation cylindrical battery cells for its Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform. Proximity to the assembly plant reduces transport transit times for finished battery components.

Mercedes-Benz serves as the primary anchor customer for the Hungarian battery facility. The German automaker contracted CATL to supply battery cells produced with carbon-neutral electricity for European vehicle models.

Stellantis and Volkswagen Group also hold commercial cell and module procurement agreements with the Debrecen facility. Those off-take arrangements support passenger electric vehicle production across Central and Western Europe.

European Union battery rules require manufacturers to document lifecycle carbon emissions across their supply chains. Producing cells in Hungary eliminates long-distance maritime freight emissions associated with shipping packs from China.

To satisfy regional carbon standards, CATL committed to using electricity generated from renewable sources. The manufacturer is assessing joint solar power development projects with Hungarian utility partners near Debrecen.

The company established GreenPower Energy Debrecen to handle auxiliary logistics and support functions. The wholly owned subsidiary operates a 44,000-square-meter facility dedicated to warehousing, pack assembly and equipment repairs.

That logistics facility will employ more than 90 specialized workers by year-end, the company said. The unit separates material storage and mechanical repair work from primary cleanroom cell fabrication.

CATL is conducting recruitment in cooperation with municipal institutions across Debrecen and Hajdú-Bihar County. The program targets operators and technicians for manufacturing, quality assurance, logistics and occupational workplace safety.

The company partnered with regional vocational schools and technical universities to train local personnel. Engineering specialists from CATL's Chinese facilities lead technical training in English during the initial operating phase.

The current hiring phase targets reaching 2,300 active site employees by Dec. 31, 2026. Commercial series manufacturing of finished cells is scheduled to begin in early 2027 following trial testing.

CATL has not published any regulatory filing establishing an employment target beyond 2,300 workers. The company has also not disclosed the specific cell volume allocations committed to each customer.
