BYD deploys 12-minute cold-weather LFP battery in Formula S
Fang Cheng Bao sets a Sept. 16 commercial launch for its sedan line, bringing 1,500-kilowatt cold-weather charging to an LFP chemistry aimed at ternary rivals.
BYD brand Fang Cheng Bao scheduled the commercial debut of its Formula S sedan for Sept. 16 on Sept. 10, bringing cold-weather flash charging into high-volume production.
The model is the first production car to carry BYD's second-generation Blade Battery. The lithium iron phosphate pack operates alongside a proprietary 1,500-kilowatt charging terminal.
Under testing at minus 30 degrees Celsius, the battery charges from 20% to 97% capacity in 12 minutes. At room temperature, a recharge from 10% to 97% takes nine minutes, the company said.
The 12-minute cold recharge is only three minutes slower than room-temperature performance. BYD caps the fast-charging curve at 97% capacity to preserve a 3% buffer for regenerative braking during initial driving.
The Formula S offers pack capacities of 76.744 kilowatt-hours and 92.093 kilowatt-hours. The larger pack delivers a driving range of up to 900 kilometers under China's light-duty vehicle test cycle.
Pre-sale prices for the sedan and wagon range from 230,000 yuan ($33,940) to 280,000 yuan ($41,610). Those figures undercut initial market expectations of 250,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan.
The Formula S measures 5,060 millimeters in length with a 2,960-millimeter wheelbase. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant generates 490 kilowatts of peak power, equal to 657 horsepower, with pre-orders beginning ahead of the Chengdu Auto Show on Aug. 20.
Ten production models across BYD's Dynasty, Ocean, Denza and Yangwang brands are scheduled to adopt the second-generation Blade Battery. Flagship models such as the Denza Z9GT and Yangwang U7 exceed 1,000 kilometers of driving range on single charges.
Sub-zero charging addresses the central commercial flaw of lithium iron phosphate chemistry. Freezing temperatures slow lithium-ion migration across liquid electrolytes, causing extended charge times and sharp driving-range loss in winter climates.
BYD re-engineered the cell chemistry using lithium manganese iron phosphate. The modification lifts nominal cell voltage from 3.2 volts to 3.8 volts, while internal resistance falls by 20%, according to company filings.
The cells use an artificial-intelligence-optimized liquid electrolyte designed to retain ionic conductivity in extreme cold. Restructured graphite particles in the anode reduce resistance to lithium intercalation during rapid energy transfer.
Those modifications allow the pack to sustain a 10C charging rate, meaning electrical current up to 10 times cell capacity. Gravimetric energy density increases by 5% over the first-generation Blade Battery released in 2020.
BYD raised the guaranteed capacity retention rate by 2.5 percentage points compared to its first-generation pack. The automaker attached a lifetime warranty to the core traction battery for individual retail buyers in mainland China.
The technical breakthrough targets an operational advantage long held by South Korean rivals LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI and SK On. Those suppliers specialize in nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistries that perform well in freezing weather.
South Korean battery makers supply more than 45% of electric vehicle batteries sold outside China. High-nickel ternary chemistries have dominated fleet procurement in cold-weather regions, including the Nordic countries, Canada and northern US states.
Nickel-rich chemistries maintain superior charge acceptance below freezing, but carry cathode material costs roughly 15% to 20% higher than iron-based alternatives. Chinese cell makers have used that cost gap to dominate domestic volume.
Eliminating cold-weather charging penalties enables Chinese automakers to pitch iron-based packs directly to northern fleet operators. The shift threatens to erode the premium pricing that Korean cell makers charge for nickel-rich cells.
Full charging speed depends on BYD's proprietary high-power charging hardware. The single-connector terminal delivers up to 1,500 kilowatts, more than three times the peak output of Tesla's 500-kilowatt V4 Supercharger stalls.
BYD plans to install 20,000 flash-charging stations across China by the end of 2026. The company pairs individual stations with dedicated energy storage units to buffer local utility grids from extreme electrical demand spikes.
Vehicles carrying the new pack can also tap China's 4.8 million existing public charging posts. Charging velocity on standard public infrastructure increases by 30% to 50% through reduced internal cell resistance, BYD said.
The automaker showcased the low-temperature charging system at its headquarters in Shenzhen on Sept. 4. That demonstration followed the formal debut of the Blade Battery 2.0 platform on March 5, 2026.
Fang Cheng Bao will disclose final showroom pricing, trim packages and delivery dates for the Formula S at its launch event on Sept. 16.
The company has not published third-party laboratory verification of cell degradation under repeated 1,500-kilowatt charging pulses in sub-zero environments. BYD has also not announced deployment schedules for flash chargers in overseas markets.
