BYD widens Seagull hatchback to five seats for export drive

The lengthened body and 95-kilowatt motor target emerging market fleet buyers as overseas shipments absorb 82.8% of the entry electric hatchback's output.

BYD detailed a lengthened five-seat Seagull hatchback on Oct. 16, 2026, expanding its entry-level electric architecture to capture overseas fleet demand and entry-tier combustion buyers.

The Shenzhen-based manufacturer is the world's largest electric vehicle maker by volume. Its Ocean series anchors the group's budget volume strategy across developing automotive markets.

Overseas deliveries absorbed 32,027 units out of 38,650 total Seagull wholesale shipments in September 2026. That export share of 82.8% cushioned an easing domestic haul of 9,517 units.

The redesigned model measures 4,205 millimeters in length, 1,810 millimeters in width and 1,570 millimeters in height. Those dimensions add 425 millimeters to overall length and 95 millimeters to body width.

Wheelbase length increases by 150 millimeters to 2,650 millimeters. The extension lifts the chassis from China's micro-car bracket directly into the compact A-segment footprint.

That wheelbase precisely matches the rival Geely Xingyuan hatchback. Geely Auto introduced the Xingyuan to counter BYD's pricing dominance in sub-100,000 yuan ($14,000) passenger cars.

The expanded shell shifts cabin architecture from a strict four-passenger configuration to a five-seat layout. Rear row legroom and hip room expand to meet commercial taxi and rideshare requirements.

Cargo capacity gains a 94-liter front storage trunk beneath the forward hood. Folding the split rear bench expands trunk luggage volume to 1,380 liters.

Powertrain components shift from front-wheel drive to a rear-mounted permanent magnet motor. The TZ164XYB drive unit is manufactured at BYD's assembly complex in Zhengzhou, Henan province.

Motor peak output reaches 95 kilowatts (127 horsepower), up 73% from 55 kilowatts on the earlier model. Top vehicle speed rises from 130 to 150 kilometers per hour.

FinDreams Battery, the wholly owned battery subsidiary of BYD, supplies lithium iron phosphate Blade packs for the lineup. The chemistries eliminate nickel and cobalt overhead to protect entry-tier cell margins.

Pack options provide capacities of 29.99 kilowatt-hours and 39.23 kilowatt-hours. Those packs deliver driving ranges of 320 kilometers and 420 kilometers under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle.

Higher trim lines adopt high-voltage flash charging hardware. Dedicated direct-current chargers refill battery reserves from 10% to 70% in five minutes, according to vehicle technical filings.

Rear suspension hardware moves from an unpowered torsion beam to an independent multi-link axle assembly. Tire widths broaden to 205/60 R16 to support increased curb weights of 1,180 to 1,255 kilograms.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved the homologation filings on July 10, 2026. The regulatory clearance confirmed dual sensor variants, including an optional roof-mounted lidar module.

BYD opened blind customer pre-orders across its domestic retail network on Oct. 9, 2026. Zhang Zhuo, general manager of the Ocean sales division, released six exterior palette choices for initial reservations.

The carmaker distributed launch credentials on Oct. 14, 2026, scheduling the market rollout for Oct. 20, 2026, at the Zhengzhou International Circuit.

The model enters foreign markets under local nameplates, including the Dolphin Mini in South America and the Dolphin Surf in Europe. The earlier short-wheelbase four-seat Seagull had faced commercial limits in global fleet tenders.

Fleet operators in Latin America and Southeast Asia routinely mandate five seatbelts for municipal taxi licensing and corporate transport procurement. The widened chassis eliminates that exclusion barrier.

Local assembly lines in Thailand and planned capacity in Brazil reduce tariff exposure on the chassis architecture. In-house control over blade cells and drive motors insulates unit economics against component supplier markups.

The automaker has not published final trim pricing or fleet discount schedules ahead of the Oct. 20 commercial launch, leaving initial transaction prices at dealer reservation estimates between 85,000 and 110,000 yuan ($11,900 to $15,400).

Commercial customer handovers and initial export fleet shipments will begin in early 2027 following the Zhengzhou production ramp.
