BYD launches 1,000-hp electric truck to challenge Tesla Semi

The 44-metric-ton ETT 44 tractor pairs a 651 kWh Blade Battery with 20-minute flash charging to enter European long-haul freight corridors against Tesla and legacy diesel truck fleets.

BYD detailed global technical specifications on Sept. 27, 2026 for its ETT 44 electric tractor, entering a 1,000-horsepower Class 8 commercial hauler into European road freight corridors against Tesla.

The 44-metric-ton tractor carries a 651-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate pack. That battery represents roughly 45% of the vehicle's 11.12-metric-ton unladen curb weight.

BYD rates operating driving range at 600 kilometers under a 40-metric-ton cargo payload at constant highway cruising speeds of 70 kilometers per hour. Fleets can also specify an optional 434-kilowatt-hour battery configuration.

The tractor incorporates commercial flash-charging hardware engineered to accept direct-current charging rates of up to 1.5 megawatts. That charging speed replenishes the battery from 20% to 80% capacity within 20 minutes, adding 400 kilometers of range.

Standard charging connections accept Combined Charging System 2 plugs at power ceilings of 420 kilowatts. That secondary mode requires roughly 60 minutes to complete the identical 20% to 80% charging cycle.

Fleet operators generate revenue only when wheels are moving, which makes rapid charging essential during mandatory driver rest breaks. European logistics regulations mandate a 45-minute driver rest interval after four and a half hours of driving.

The truck powertrain uses an 851.2-volt electrical architecture with structural cell-to-pack engineering. The layout integrates prismatic lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery cells directly into the chassis without intermediate module enclosures.

Lithium iron phosphate chemistry provides higher thermal stability and lower raw material expenses than nickel-based battery packs. American and continental competitors frequently rely on nickel-manganese-cobalt formulations to reduce battery mass.

BYD backs the tractor pack with a commercial battery warranty spanning 10 years or 1.2 million kilometers. The cells withstand more than 5,000 full charging cycles before capacity declines below operational thresholds, the company said.

The vehicle enters the market as European transport operators face stiff decarbonization rules. European Union mandates require commercial vehicle manufacturers to lower fleet-wide carbon emissions 45% by 2030 and 90% by 2040.

Those targets place heavy pressure on established European truck manufacturers. Daimler Truck commands roughly 28% of Europe's heavy commercial registrations with its Mercedes-Benz Actros diesel and battery-electric lineup.

Volvo Group holds approximately 22% of European heavy truck sales, while Traton brands Scania and MAN face direct price competition from Chinese battery integration.

Tesla produces its competing Semi using high-nickel cells. The American automaker operates an 800-kilowatt charging system that remains incompatible with public Combined Charging System standards across Europe.

Safety assessment programs have cleared the truck for regional highway operations. The European New Car Assessment Programme rated the ETT 44 five stars on Sept. 14, 2026, granting the vehicle its CitySafe commercial prize.

The assessment marked the first time the organization tested a long-haul battery-electric truck. The ETT 44 scored 89% in Safe Driving due to direct visibility through lower door glass panels and digital mirror cameras.

The truck scored 73% in Crash Avoidance during testing. Test engineers reported that electronic lane-keeping systems and autonomous braking behind crossing cyclists require further calibration.

BYD showed companion rigid truck variants alongside the flagship tractor. The company expanded its European commercial catalog across gross weight classifications ranging from 3.5 to 44 metric tons.

The vehicle roster features 26-metric-ton swap-body units, municipal hook-lift trucks and dedicated electric yard tractors designed for distribution terminals.

BYD combines truck hardware with proprietary stationary batteries and grid balancing software. The manufacturer packages vehicles, depot charging stations and fleet energy management under single commercial contracts.

Electricity cost savings over diesel fuel narrow initial equipment price premiums over three-year fleet depreciation cycles, the manufacturer said. Heavy commercial tractors regularly travel more than 120,000 kilometers annually.

Stella Li, executive vice president at BYD, said the company intends to establish local vehicle production inside Europe. Local assembly circumvents rising import duties on completed zero-emission vehicles.

BYD already operates an electric bus assembly plant in Komárom, Hungary. The manufacturer is also constructing passenger car facilities in Hungary and Turkey.

The automaker maintains commercial component agreements with French automotive supplier Forvia. It also sources chassis components from Austrian industrial group Voestalpine for commercial products.

The company has not published retail sales prices or European delivery deposits for the ETT 44. BYD has also withheld specific wholesale pricing for its 1.5-megawatt depot charging terminals.

Commercial deliveries of the ETT 44 to European freight operators begin in the second quarter of 2027, according to company schedules.

Operational megawatt charging stations across European highway corridors currently number fewer than 50 locations, according to industry infrastructure records.
