Contemporary Amperex Technology stepped up its multi-billion-dollar share buyback on Nov. 1, 2026, absorbing roughly 19.37 million shares through late October to stabilize its stock following third-quarter earnings deceleration.

The Chinese battery manufacturer approved the capital return plan on July 24 and secured shareholder clearance on Aug. 12. The resolution authorizes open-market repurchases worth between 20 billion yuan ($2.9 billion) and 40 billion yuan ($5.8 billion).

All repurchased shares will be cancelled to reduce registered capital rather than distributed to employees. The buyback price ceiling was set at 573 yuan per share, representing 150% of recent 30-day average trading levels.

Under the maximum 40 billion yuan allocation, the manufacturer can retire approximately 69.81 million A-shares. That volume represents about 1.51% of the company's total issued share capital, according to Shenzhen Stock Exchange filings.

The repurchase program launched on Sept. 11, when the company spent 199.97 million yuan on an initial block of 604,293 shares. Those trades were executed between 330.15 yuan and 331.61 yuan per share.

Buying gathered pace through the rest of the month. A regulatory filing dated Oct. 8 confirmed that cumulative acquisitions reached 10,945,162 shares by Sept. 30, with outlays totaling 3.303 billion yuan.

Investor sentiment turned negative when CATL disclosed third-quarter financial results on Oct. 20. Third-quarter revenue rose 58.58% year-on-year to 165.22 billion yuan, but net profit expanded by only 14.54% to 21.25 billion yuan.

The third-quarter profit figure represented a 5.77% contraction compared with second-quarter net income of 22.55 billion yuan. It also marked the company's slowest quarterly earnings expansion in seven quarters.

The widening divergence between volume growth and earnings generated immediate concern over pricing power. For the first nine months, revenue climbed 56.19% to 442.14 billion yuan, while sales costs jumped 61.61% to 341.70 billion yuan.

Gross margins reflected that operational friction. CATL booked a third-quarter gross margin of 20.69%, down 5.11 percentage points from 25.80% in the third quarter of 2025, according to financial reports filed in Hong Kong.

Operating cash flow also tightened during the period. Net cash generated from operating activities fell 23.60% year-on-year to 61.63 billion yuan over the first nine months, pressured by working capital expansion.

Inventories climbed 53.15% from late 2025 to 144.77 billion yuan by the end of September. Accounts receivable also jumped 47.78% over the same period to 112.91 billion yuan, the company reported.

Equity markets responded with heavy selling when trading resumed on Oct. 21. CATL shares plunged 12.03% in Shenzhen during that single session as domestic and international brokerages lowered their price targets.

Management countered the selloff with immediate market intervention on Oct. 21. The manufacturer repurchased 3,488,624 shares for approximately 800 million yuan, lifting total program acquisitions to 16,229,800 shares worth 4.607 billion yuan.

A second intervention followed on Oct. 28. CATL acquired an additional 871,300 shares for 200 million yuan, bringing cumulative confirmed spending under the mandate to more than 4.807 billion yuan, exchange filings show.

Market tallies compiled by brokerages on Nov. 1 showed cumulative repurchased volume approaching 19.37 million shares. Analysts characterized the steady buying as a corporate floor beneath Shenzhen equity valuations.

The company has not filed an official monthly disclosure confirming the specific 19.37 million cumulative share figure as of Nov. 1. CATL has also published no regulatory filings signaling any formal postponement or cancellation of its overseas factory investments.

CATL currently controls roughly 40.7% of the global electric vehicle battery market. Competitors including LG Energy Solution, which holds about 12% global market share, face similar margin erosion as automotive clients reassess procurement targets.

Global automakers have delayed vehicle rollout timelines in North America and Europe, dampening demand for nickel-rich and lithium-iron-phosphate cells. That demand pause has intensified price competition among Chinese manufacturers in their home market.

Despite the earnings slowdown, CATL maintains substantial balance sheet reserves. The manufacturer carried 372.05 billion yuan in cash and equivalents at the end of June, with a debt-to-asset ratio of 63.65%.

Financing cash flow surged 724% during the first nine months, supported by overseas bond issuance and an H-share capital placement. Those liquid balances provide ample funding for continued buybacks without threatening ongoing factory tooling.

Shareholders approved a 12-month execution window that leaves the buyback mandate valid until Aug. 12, 2027. The company is required to submit its monthly repurchase summary for October to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange during the first week of November.
