EcoPro BM enters talks with CATL on Hungary cathode deal

The prospective 20,000-ton annual offtake agreement would link South Korea's top cathode maker to China's leading battery producer ahead of European Union sourcing rules.

EcoPro BM entered discussions with Contemporary Amperex Technology on Sept. 18, 2026, regarding an annual 20,000-metric-ton cathode material supply agreement for the Chinese battery maker's European production facilities.

The volume under negotiation represents roughly 13 gigawatt-hours of cell manufacturing capacity. That amount is sufficient to power approximately 200,000 standard passenger electric vehicles each year.

Cathode active materials represent about 40% of total cell manufacturing costs. The prospective deal marks the first direct material procurement arrangement between South Korea's largest cathode producer and the world's largest cell manufacturer.

Neither company has filed a regulatory disclosure on the negotiations. Financial terms, contract duration, unit pricing and binding offtake commitments have not been confirmed by either party.

Talks center on supplying high-nickel ternary cathode chemistry from EcoPro BM's manufacturing complex in Debrecen, Hungary. The site sits approximately three kilometers from CATL's European battery gigafactory.

EcoPro BM completed Phase 1 of the Debrecen complex on Nov. 28, 2025, establishing 54,000 metric tons of annual cathode capacity. The group plans to expand total site capacity to 108,000 metric tons.

The South Korean cathode manufacturer initially built the Hungarian lines for nickel-cobalt-aluminum chemistries. It began a 40 billion won ($29 million) line conversion in August 2026 to add nickel-cobalt-manganese production capabilities.

The factory conversion allows EcoPro BM to supply hybrid cathode configurations. The dual-line capability addresses technical specifications demanded by European automotive original equipment manufacturers and Chinese cell makers.

Commercial deliveries under the potential agreement would begin in 2028. That timeline aligns with CATL's phased manufacturing expansion at its 100-gigawatt-hour Hungarian battery plant.

Both manufacturers face stricter regulatory benchmarks under the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act. The regulation requires regional processing of critical mineral inputs for clean-energy components sold within the bloc.

Rules of origin under the European Union-United Kingdom Trade and Cooperation Agreement also impose rising local-content requirements. Automakers must source European-processed cathode chemistries to avoid cross-border tariffs on assembled vehicles.

Chinese battery manufacturers operating in Europe cannot rely exclusively on domestic cathode supply chains without risking regulatory penalties. Local European procurement directly mitigates compliance and tariff liabilities.

EcoPro BM management publicly acknowledged pursuing commercial arrangements with Chinese battery manufacturers during an earnings conference call on April 29, 2025. Executives named CATL and Envision AESC as prospective European partners.

Working-level contacts expanded during the InterBattery 2026 exhibition in Seoul in March 2026. Senior CATL procurement executives held bilateral meetings at EcoPro's exhibition booth to discuss European production roadmaps.

The Debrecen complex provides integrated supply chain benefits for local cell plants. Affiliate EcoPro Innovation processes 8,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide annually on the same site.

Industrial gas supplier EcoPro AP operates alongside the cathode facility, supplying 16,000 cubic meters of oxygen and nitrogen per hour. The co-located operations reduce cross-border transportation logistics and handling overhead.

EcoPro BM also secures raw materials through its BNSI nickel smelting venture in Indonesia. Upstream integration cushions cathode processing costs against international nickel price swings.

The prospective partnership signals a structural shift in East Asian battery supply chains. South Korean material producers have historically supplied domestic cell makers Samsung SDI and SK On.

Securing CATL would diversify EcoPro BM's customer concentration away from captive South Korean clients. It allows the supplier to tap cell contracts secured by CATL with European automotive groups.

For CATL, sourcing from a South Korean supplier located inside Hungary secures a local materials buffer. It circumvents sea freight delays and geopolitical friction linked to Chinese raw material exports.

Financial regulatory filings with the Korea Exchange show no current disclosure confirming final volume allocations. The Financial Supervisory Service's disclosure database contains no formal agreement between the entities.

EcoPro BM's Debrecen facility targets 10,000 metric tons of output this year and 30,000 metric tons next year. The current conversion schedule aims to complete customer qualification testing during the fourth quarter of 2027.
