Chinese chipmakers ramp real-time Ethernet SoCs for industrial robot controllers
Integrated EtherCAT silicon from GigaDevice, HPMicro and Nations Technologies replaces imported controllers, cutting board size and lead times for servo drives.
Chinese semiconductor vendors have scaled volume production of dedicated real-time industrial Ethernet system-on-chip controllers, expanding domestic component supplies for factory automation equipment and articulated robots as of August 2026.
The silicon transition replaces standalone communication application-specific integrated circuits with single-die controllers. These combine computing processor cores, physical layer transceivers and fieldbus interfaces on a single substrate.
Industrial robot builders in China previously depended on imported fieldbus silicon from suppliers like Beckhoff Automation and Microchip Technology. Those discrete chips handled deterministic Ethernet communication across multi-axis motor networks.
GigaDevice Semiconductor launched the GDSCN832 EtherCAT slave controller and the GD32H75E industrial microcontroller family on Nov. 12, 2024, having secured an official protocol intellectual property license from Germany's Beckhoff Automation.
The Beijing-based chipmaker began commercial mass production shipments in the second quarter of 2025. The flagship microcontroller features a 600-megahertz Arm Cortex-M7 core and integrated dual-port physical layer hardware.
The hardware architecture provides a 64-bit distributed clock that achieves synchronization precision below 1 microsecond. It also incorporates 8 kilobytes of dual-port random-access memory and eight fieldbus memory management units.
Shanghai-based HPMicro Semiconductor introduced its HPM6E00 series in December 2023. The chip features dual 600-megahertz RISC-V cores and integrates a Beckhoff-licensed EtherCAT slave controller alongside a gigabit Ethernet switch.
The HPM6E00 series integrates hardware motion accelerators, including space vector transformation modules and closed-loop controllers. It delivers pulse-width modulation resolution down to 100 picoseconds for high-precision motor commutation.
HPMicro expanded the lineup in January 2026, unveiling the HPM5E3Y microcontroller designed specifically for compact robotic joint actuators. The chip runs a 480-megahertz RISC-V core inside a 9-by-9-millimeter package.
The miniature package integrates two physical layer transceivers and dedicated motion control loops, allowing engineers to mount the entire communication and drive circuit directly onto robot joint motor housings.
Nations Technologies introduced its N32H788EC and N32H765EC microcontroller families on April 17, 2025, during the Electronica China trade show in Shanghai. The dual-core design pairs Arm Cortex-M7 and Cortex-M4 processors.
The Shenzhen-based designer integrated a wafer-level EtherCAT sub-device interface directly onto the main processor die. The chip targets multi-axis servo drives, programmable logic controllers and digital power converters.
Specialized fabless suppliers Triductor Technology and Funcience Semiconductor have also commercialized dedicated communication bridge chips. Their TR8253L and FCE1100 series serve as drop-in hardware alternatives to legacy Microchip LAN9252 chips.
For factory automation system integrators, single-chip real-time Ethernet controllers resolve physical footprint bottlenecks. Multi-axis robot designs require compact printed circuit boards that fit inside cramped robotic arm enclosures.
Traditional controller architectures required a host microcontroller, an external EtherCAT slave controller and separate physical layer chips. The discrete arrangement occupied significant board real estate and demanded high-pin-count parallel routing.
Consolidating those functions into a single system-on-chip eliminates high-speed external trace routing between processor memory buses and communication controllers, reducing board complexity and lowering electromagnetic interference.
The consolidated architecture reduces printed circuit board bill-of-materials costs on multi-axis servo drive boards by 20% to 35%, according to component teardowns and distributor reference pricing sheets.
The new chip families also incorporate multi-protocol encoder interfaces. On-chip peripheral blocks support incremental encoders, absolute magnetic encoders, resolvers and digital protocols including BiSS-C and EnDat without requiring external decoder silicon.
On-chip support for Time-Sensitive Networking and gigabit Ethernet standards allows industrial machines to transmit deterministic motion control data and diagnostic traffic over shared factory networks without supplementary protocol gateway hardware.
Industrial servo drives powered by these domestic system-on-chip controllers achieve current-loop update cycles down to 31.25 microseconds, matching the response metrics of Japanese high-end servo systems from Yaskawa Electric and Mitsubishi Electric.
Procurement lead times also improve for Chinese robot manufacturers. Delivery schedules for imported specialized communication chips stretched beyond 40 weeks during global semiconductor supply disruptions.
Domestic volume production shortens component fulfillment cycles to under 12 weeks for domestic factory automation builders. That allows machine tool and robot manufacturers to maintain leaner component inventories.
Rising production of six-axis articulated arms and humanoid robotic platforms accelerates the shift toward integrated silicon. Humanoid designs often require more than 20 motorized joints, each needing deterministic fieldbus synchronization.
Domestic chip vendors have accompanied hardware deliveries with certified software protocol stacks. GigaDevice and HPMicro provide complete software development kits compatible with standard real-time operating systems.
GigaDevice obtained TÜV Rheinland IEC 61508 functional safety software test library certification on Oct. 29, 2025. That compliance documentation helps machinery builders meet industrial safety certification standards.
All commercialized Chinese EtherCAT controllers maintain strict protocol compliance verified by the EtherCAT Technology Group. That compliance ensures interoperability with existing master controllers from Beckhoff Automation and Omron.
Leading Chinese robot makers, including Estun Automation and Inovance Technology, continue to deploy customized motion control architectures. Specific wafer foundry contracts and monthly production volumes for their proprietary control boards remain undisclosed.
Standard evaluation boards and commercial chip batches from GigaDevice, HPMicro and Nations Technologies are currently stocked across regional distributor channels, with shipments fulfilling orders from logistics hubs in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
