Samsung SDI and LG Energy double ESS warranties to 20 years in US

The 20-year terms cover containerized grid batteries guaranteeing 70% capacity retention to protect backlogs against Chinese pricing pressure.

Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution doubled performance warranties on utility-scale battery energy storage systems to 20 years on Sept. 30, matching terms pioneered by Chinese rivals in Western power grids.

The commercial revision extends coverage from an earlier 10-year baseline. The policy protects order backlogs in North America, where LG Energy Solution holds an estimated 150 gigawatt-hours of utility orders and Samsung SDI holds 80 to 100 gigawatt-hours.

Chinese cell manufacturers, led by Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), established the 20-year warranty benchmark after securing 64% of the global energy storage market. South Korean producers are now adopting that standard to defend utility customer relationships in the United States and Europe.

Samsung SDI confirmed the updated term for its Samsung Battery Box series, known as SBB. The integrated 20-foot container solution packages cells, modules and safety systems for high-voltage grid interconnections.

The initial SBB model carried a 10-year warranty when commercial shipments began. Samsung SDI extended that coverage to two decades for contract negotiations closed during the current procurement cycle, a company official said.

The guarantee requires battery systems to retain at least 70% of initial storage capacity over the 20-year lifespan. Samsung SDI conditioned the coverage on operational constraints, including strict battery enclosure temperatures, limits on annual cycle counts and capped operational run-times.

Samsung SDI cited customer field data and enhanced thermal safety engineering for the decision. The manufacturer deploys high-nickel nickel-cobalt-aluminum chemistry alongside proprietary safety vents and fire-suppression barriers within the SBB enclosure.

LG Energy Solution introduced equivalent 20-year system warranties for its containerized JF2 AC LINK and DC LINK utility units. The company previously backed its lithium iron phosphate storage products, including the enblock system, with 10-year contracts.

The JF2 platform uses 5.11-megawatt-hour AC blocks configured for large-scale utility and data center installations. LG Energy Solution integrates its proprietary Aeros energy management software to monitor cell degradation and validate site performance against warranty thresholds.

Software monitoring allows field engineers to track cumulative energy throughput in real time. The warranty terms require facility operators to run the equipment within specified ambient windows to maintain active claims, LG Energy Solution said.

The warranty expansion reflects commercial pressure from Chinese producers such as CATL, BYD and Sungrow Power Supply. Chinese battery suppliers used low-cost lithium iron phosphate chemistry and long warranty periods to capture utility contracts across Europe and North America.

South Korean manufacturers are responding by pairing extended warranties with localized manufacturing. Both companies are erecting factory capacity in the United States to satisfy domestic content rules under federal clean energy laws.

LG Energy Solution plans to expand North American storage battery production to 50 gigawatt-hours by the end of 2026. The company is retooling production lines at its factory in Queen Creek, Arizona, to build lithium iron phosphate container cells.

Samsung SDI produces utility batteries at its plant in Ulsan, South Korea, and at a joint venture facility in Kokomo, Indiana. The Kokomo site holds an initial capacity of 23 gigawatt-hours, with plans to add 20 to 30 gigawatt-hours of dedicated storage lines by the second quarter of 2028.

SK On has not offered 20-year warranties to international buyers. The company won 50.3% of the capacity tendered in South Korea's second national storage auction, but its overseas grid projects remain in pre-delivery phases without public terms.

Grid operators and renewable power developers increasingly demand 20-year guarantees to match the lifespan of solar arrays and wind installations. Extended warranties reduce asset depreciation and lower borrowing costs for commercial debt syndicates funding clean power projects.

The two South Korean suppliers also pitch accelerated grid integration for artificial intelligence computing clusters. LG Energy Solution qualified its JF2 AC LINK battery under Nvidia's DSX reference design on Sept. 22 to address voltage dips at large data centers.

Neither LG Energy Solution nor Samsung SDI published regulatory filings detailing warranty reserve allocations on Sept. 30. The extended coverage terms operate as confidential bilateral agreements rather than statutory disclosures, according to market participants.

The notices do not state the financial penalty thresholds triggered if capacity slips below 70% before year 20. Neither supplier has disclosed how third-party insurers share underwriting risk for the extended operational periods.

Samsung SDI plans to begin commercial production of its next-generation SBB 1.7 and SBB 2.0 systems at its United States facilities in 2027. South Korea's power exchange will issue the tender notice for its third centralized grid battery auction before the end of October.
