Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa defended on Oct. 20 a 400 billion yen ($2.6 billion) state capital request for domestic chipmaker Rapidus, exposing Tokyo's funding tension after committing $21 billion to overseas fabrication lines.

The domestic request seeks 150 billion yen in fiscal 2027, 150 billion yen in 2028 and 100 billion yen in 2029. The funds represent direct equity, adding to 250 billion yen in state capital already committed.
