Lotus Technology maintained European showroom prices on Sept. 11, choosing to absorb the European Union's 18.8% countervailing duty directly rather than passing the cost increases onto retail consumers.

The pricing defense shelters order volumes for the brand's premium electric vehicles across continental dealerships. Zhejiang Geely Holding Group owns a controlling stake in the Nasdaq-listed automaker and guides its international trade strategy.

Brussels levies a definitive 18.8% countervailing tariff on Geely automotive imports under Regulation 2024/2754. The trade penalty sits on top of the European Union's standard 10% passenger vehicle duty, creating a 28.8% border tax.

The tariff applies directly to the Eletre sports utility vehicle and the Emeya luxury sedan. Both battery electric models are assembled at Geely's manufacturing complex in Wuhan, China, and shipped to European ports.

Lotus Technology delivered 3,904 vehicles during the first six months of 2026, marking a 39% increase year over year. Chinese-assembled lifestyle utility vehicles and sedans accounted for 77% of total customer handovers.

First-half revenue rose 23% from a year earlier to $268 million, according to regulatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Gross margin expanded to 10%, up from 8% in the prior-year period.

Absorbing the border levies compresses vehicle margins across Europe. The operating loss reached $97 million in the six-month period, while net loss totaled $151 million despite narrowing 52% through internal cost reductions.

Lotus Technology carried total liabilities of $3.23 billion against assets of $1.90 billion as of June 30. The operating deficit created a total shareholder deficit of $1.33 billion on the corporate balance sheet.

Parent company Zhejiang Geely provided $128 million in funding during the first half of 2026 to support liquidity. Geely capital allows Lotus to endure tariff absorption without immediately hiking vehicle stickers.

Passing the tariff onto consumers risked pricing Lotus models out of the competitive European luxury market. The base Eletre SUV retails near €96,000 ($106,000) in Germany, placing it directly against German luxury rivals.

A 28.8% cumulative duty adds roughly €20,000 ($22,000) to landed import costs on unhedged shipments. Raising retail stickers by equivalent amounts would damage showroom foot traffic against Porsche and BMW electric alternatives.

Geely faces individual countervailing duties lower than state-owned SAIC Motor Corporation, which pays 35.3%. BYD pays 17.0%, while non-cooperating Chinese exporters face the maximum 35.3% duty set by European trade authorities.

To mitigate the tariff impact, Lotus Technology is pivoting vehicle engineering toward hybrid powertrains. EU countervailing duties apply exclusively to pure battery electric vehicles, excluding hybrid models that contain internal combustion systems.

Lotus expanded sales of the Eletre X plug-in hybrid in early 2026 to bypass the countervailing duty structure. Plug-in hybrid variants pay only the baseline 10% EU customs tariff upon entering European ports.

The manufacturer unveiled its Focus 2030 strategy in May, outlining plans for a hybrid-V8 supercar. The powertrain revision shifts capital expenditures away from pure electric drivetrains toward high-performance hybrid configurations.

Lotus Technology completed the acquisition of Lotus Advance Technologies on Aug. 21, taking full ownership of Lotus UK. The Hethel facility in Norfolk, England, houses traditional sports car production and specialized lightweight engineering.

The transaction consolidated sports car assembly in the United Kingdom with mass-market electric vehicle manufacturing in central China. The put option was triggered after total brand deliveries cleared the required 5,000-vehicle threshold in 2024.

British sports car production remains outside the scope of European tariffs on Chinese automotive imports. However, the Norfolk plant lacks the tooling and physical capacity required to assemble large electric sport-utility vehicles.

Lotus Technology has not published a formal European pricing schedule detailing model-by-model margin compression across national dealership networks, leaving exact regional distributor cost sharing undisclosed.

Zhejiang Geely, BYD and SAIC have filed lawsuits before the Court of Justice of the European Union challenging the tariffs. The legal complaints contest the European Commission's calculation methods regarding state financial contributions.

European trade negotiators and Chinese commercial delegates held discussions in Brussels regarding potential minimum import price undertakings. Those bilateral talks have not yielded an agreement replacing the countervailing tariff schedule.

The definitive countervailing measures enacted under Regulation 2024/2754 remain in force across all 27 European Union member states through Oct. 31, 2029, unless overturned by the Luxembourg court.
