HD Hyundai Heavy Industries secured design approval on Sept. 18 from Japan’s classification society ClassNK for a 35,000-cubic-meter liquefied petroleum gas and ammonia carrier, clearing regulatory access for regional Asian terminals.

The vessel targets midsize gas trade routes, offering 35,000 cubic meters of cargo capacity tailored to shallow-draft coastal berths. It allows maritime operators to transport both commercial LPG and zero-carbon ammonia.

ClassNK reviewed the containment arrangement and hull integrity under its Rule Part N standards. That framework incorporates the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk.

The shipyard developed the midsize vessel to satisfy local mooring and cargo-handling restrictions across major Japanese import terminals. Japanese safety standards impose strict berthing boundaries on toxic gas discharges.

Securing the Approval in Principle from a Japanese classification society lowers technical risk for Tokyo-based shipping lines. It shortens the formal registration timeline when commercial customers convert the blueprint into construction contracts.

The certification handover took place at the Gastech 2026 energy conference in Bangkok. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Chief Technology Officer Hong-Ryeol Ryu met ClassNK President Hayato Suga to formally complete the review.

South Korean shipbuilders dominate orders for very large ammonia carriers with capacities exceeding 88,000 cubic meters. Yet Japanese domestic terminals require smaller vessels to handle shallow draft depth and port congestion.

A 35,000-cubic-meter hull functions as a regional distribution workhorse. It can lift cargo from deepwater export facilities in Australia or the Middle East and discharge directly into Japanese utility docks.

Ammonia requires specialized cargo management because the compound is toxic and corrosive to brass and copper fittings. Fuel containment systems must maintain cargo in a fully refrigerated state at minus 33 degrees Celsius.

ClassNK validated the cargo tank structural boundaries, venting relief systems and leak-detection sensors against accidental atmospheric release. The design ensures safe offloading near coastal population centers.

Japan plans to co-fire clean ammonia with coal at power stations to reduce emissions, beginning commercial trial operations by late 2027. That program will require millions of tons of imported ammonia feedstock each year.

Electric utilities including JERA require dedicated gas carriers that match terminal manifold dimensions and safety envelopes. Japanese shipping consortia have historically favored ClassNK-certified hulls when bidding for long-term domestic utility freight charters.

For HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, the design approval positions the yard ahead of Chinese rivals in the high-spec midsize gas carrier sector. Chinese shipyards hold large order books for container ships but have limited ClassNK gas certifications.

The certification allows the Ulsan-based builder to offer pre-engineered berths to Japanese operators without requiring complete structural redesigns. That flexibility reduces engineering costs and shortens yard delivery schedules.

The dual-fuel gas carrier design can alternate between liquefied petroleum gas and ammonia cargoes without structural tank alterations. Shipowners can trade traditional LPG cargoes while global ammonia trade routes mature.
