Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said Oct. 15, 2026, that it will provide backup packaging capacity to chip designers if rival Intel Corp. encounters manufacturing bottlenecks.

The offer targets artificial intelligence processor developers that signed packaging contracts with Intel to bypass chronic foundry shortages. Advanced packaging binds multiple computing dies and high-bandwidth memory into a single system, making it the primary bottleneck in AI accelerator deliveries.

TSMC generated NT$1.49 trillion ($46.7 billion) in consolidated revenue during the third quarter, a 50.9% increase from a year earlier. Advanced nodes accounted for 79% of total wafer revenue, the company said in its quarterly earnings release.

Third-quarter net profit rose 69% year-on-year to NT$763.1 billion ($23.8 billion), while gross margin reached 66.4%. Robust demand for AI processors prompted management to raise its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast to about 44% in US-dollar terms.

Chairman and Chief Executive C.C. Wei addressed the potential packaging bottleneck during the foundry's third-quarter earnings call. Morgan Stanley analyst Charlie Chan asked if TSMC would rescue customers who selected Intel's Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB-T) but later encountered delivery delays.

Wei confirmed the contingency plan directly. TSMC prioritizes smooth market rollouts for its end customers, and the foundry will step in with packaging lines if rival ramp-ups falter, Wei said.

The remarks underscore TSMC's leverage over the merchant AI silicon market. While major hyperscalers seek second-source packaging to diversify away from Taiwan, front-end logic fabrication remains concentrated in TSMC fabs.

Intel has pitched its standalone packaging service as a viable alternative for customers seeking capacity without switching front-end foundries. Cloud providers including Amazon Web Services and Cisco Systems have qualified EMIB packaging lines to assemble custom networking and AI chips.

Packaging capacity remains scarce across the industry. TSMC operates roughly 120,000 wafers per month of Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate (CoWoS) packaging, where top customer Nvidia Corp. absorbs roughly 60% of total allocation, according to industry estimates.

Alternative packaging routes face severe technical hurdles. Industry reports indicate that early-stage EMIB-T substrate runs suffered yield fallout near 50% due to package warpage — the physical bending caused by thermal expansion differences between silicon dies and organic substrate panels.

In contrast, TSMC has reached volume production on 5.5-reticle size CoWoS-L assemblies with production yields topping 98%, Wei said. A reticle size represents the maximum exposure area of a lithography tool, roughly 858 square millimeters.

CoWoS remains the primary industry standard for high-end AI accelerators, Wei said. The company is developing larger packaging architectures measuring nine times and 14 times the standard reticle area to accommodate next-generation cluster processors.

TSMC plans to deploy its nine-reticle CoWoS platform commercially in 2027, followed by 14-reticle modules around 2029. Management told analysts that continuous packaging innovations will ensure customers retain high manufacturing yields as die dimensions expand.

By offering backup lines, TSMC tightens its integration lock-in across the AI supply chain. Designers who attempt to unbundle front-end wafer fabrication from back-end packaging risk returning to TSMC if alternative assemblers miss product launch windows.

The earnings call transcript does not state which chip designers have formally requested backup allocation, and TSMC has not disclosed volumes committed for emergency packaging transfers.

Contract terms for outsourced semiconductor packaging typically enforce rigid schedule windows. Intel has scheduled commercial risk production for its next-generation advanced packaging lines in the first quarter of 2027.
