Synopsys expanded its engineering partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. on Sept. 30, deploying autonomous agentic artificial intelligence tools across TSMC's advanced 1.4-nanometer A14 foundry process and multi-die packaging platforms.

The collaboration certifies electronic design automation flows for TSMC's smallest announced manufacturing node. It supports multi-die interposers scaling to 5.5 times reticle size, representing over 4,500 square millimeters of silicon area.

More than 50 semiconductor and systems companies are evaluating the autonomous software platform across active tape-out workflows, according to commercial deployment data released by Synopsys.

Agentic artificial intelligence refers to software systems that can plan, execute and debug complex multistep design tasks without requiring continuous human guidance at each engineering step.

The alliance certifies Synopsys digital and analog tool flows on TSMC's A14 process, a 1.4-nanometer technology node that succeeds its two-nanometer class manufacturing lines.

Both companies jointly developed device routing enablement within Synopsys Custom Compiler to accelerate analog layout. Device routing automates the intricate physical wiring that links individual transistors on silicon.

Analog circuits historically required manual placement and routing by experienced physical design engineers. The new autonomous tools cut layout turnaround time by translating functional schematics directly into foundry-certified geometry.

For digital logic circuits, Synopsys integrated large language model analytics into its Fusion Compiler platform. The system evaluates timing, power and area trade-offs to shorten design convergence cycles.

The agreement also addresses heterogeneous multi-die packaging, utilizing Synopsys 3DIC Compiler to optimize chiplet floorplans on TSMC CoWoS and 3DFabric stacking technologies.

Multi-die designs combine distinct processor, memory and communication dies on a shared silicon interposer. As AI accelerator assemblies expand, managing physical placement and signal integrity across chiplet interfaces becomes critical.

The packaging toolset includes design enablement for integrated voltage regulators on CoWoS interposers. The regulators help manage steep power delivery transients and thermal dissipation inside dense compute clusters.

Synopsys and TSMC also validated multiphysics signoff workflows for TSMC-COUPE, a compact universal photonic engine that integrates optical engines with electronic compute dies.

Optical interconnects convert electrical data signals into light pulses, reducing data transmission latency and power consumption between adjacent accelerator packages across data center fabrics.

Alongside design software, Synopsys expanded its two-nanometer intellectual property portfolio. The expansion includes validated interface blocks for Peripheral Component Interconnect Express 7.0 and High Bandwidth Memory 4.

The certified intellectual property blocks allow semiconductor developers to integrate high-throughput memory channels into their chips without building custom input-output physical-layer circuitry from scratch.

Leading fabless semiconductor designers face severe physical verification bottlenecks as next-generation artificial intelligence accelerators surpass several hundred billion transistors on single multichip modules.

MediaTek is deploying the agentic analog design platform to automate layout tasks across its mobile and mixed-signal processor portfolios, which form the primary share of its corporate revenue.

AheadComputing adopted Synopsys AgentEngineer tools across its processor implementation and engineering change order workflows to accelerate timing closure on custom central processing units, the company said.

Synopsys built its Autopilot Platform with architectural integrations for cloud computing environments operated by Microsoft, allowing engineering teams to run agentic verification clusters at cloud scale.

The Autopilot software maintains domain-specific context intelligence and encryption guardrails to ensure proprietary chip architectures and foundry process design kits remain isolated during autonomous agent operations.

TSMC relies on Open Innovation Platform alliance partners to validate software tool suites years ahead of commercial wafer production, protecting customer tape-out schedules and fab utilization rates.

The expanded software qualification gives Synopsys an operational advantage against rival design automation vendor Cadence Design Systems in securing early sub-two-nanometer customer implementations.

The companies did not disclose the financial value of the software licensing agreements, and TSMC has not published commercial pricing for its A14 process design kits.

TSMC plans to begin commercial volume production of its A14 node in 2028, while Synopsys scheduled general commercial availability for its AgentEngineer solutions and Autopilot Platform in late 2026.
