Qualcomm formally named Samsung Electronics as a primary automotive memory supplier on Nov. 8, 2026, expanding their commercial partnership beyond contract chip manufacturing into hardware for software-defined vehicles.

The supplier designation was confirmed in regulatory filings for the fiscal year ended Sept. 27. Qualcomm reported automotive semiconductor revenue of $6.004 billion for fiscal 2026, up 51.7% from $3.957 billion in fiscal 2025.

Vehicular silicon accounted for 13.9% of Qualcomm's $43.12 billion in total company revenue during the period. The automotive unit generated $1.990 billion in revenue during the fourth fiscal quarter alone, an 89% increase year over year.

Qualcomm stated in its annual filing that it primarily purchases memory components for products including automotive platforms from Micron Technology and Samsung Electronics. The disclosure marks the first time Qualcomm has publicly confirmed Samsung Electronics as an automotive memory vendor.

Annual reports filed for fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2025 omitted memory vendor identifications entirely. Qualcomm had historically cited Samsung Electronics only as an outsourced contract fabrication partner for mobile application processors.

Automotive cockpits require low-power double data rate DRAM to run digital clusters, streaming video and navigation graphics. Modern vehicles demand semiconductors qualified to operate in temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees Celsius to 105 degrees Celsius.

Samsung Electronics previously completed technical qualification of its automotive LPDDR4X memory for Qualcomm's Snapdragon Digital Chassis in August 2024. That qualification covered dynamic random-access memory packages with storage densities reaching 32 gigabytes.

The supplied memory modules met the AEC-Q100 reliability specification established by the Automotive Electronics Council. The standard requires extensive thermal stress and electrical endurance testing before components enter mass vehicle production.

Samsung Electronics held 40% of the worldwide automotive memory market last year, according to data from S&P Global Mobility. Micron Technology captured 36% of the market over the same 12-month period.

The market share distribution marks a reversal from 2019, when Micron Technology controlled 45% of vehicular memory shipments and Samsung Electronics held 21%. Samsung Electronics gained automotive market share by winning procurement contracts across China, South Korea and Europe.

Automotive dynamic random-access memory accounted for 44% of Samsung Electronics' automotive semiconductor sales volume, according to market tracking records. Automotive flash storage formats, including Universal Flash Storage products, represented another 33% of its vehicular shipments.

Micron Technology had responded to intensifying competition by executing long-term commercial agreements with automotive equipment makers in July 2026. Those supply agreements covered customer programs at Denso, Hyundai Mobis and Harman International.

Rising automotive chip demand has helped Qualcomm offset broader cyclical downturns in its core consumer handset operations. Qualcomm recorded a 13% decline in annual handset revenue during fiscal 2026, dropping to $24.8 billion.

Modern electric passenger cars incorporate more than 1,000 discrete semiconductor components across battery management, body controls and motor inverters. Autonomous driving architectures require up to 2,000 chips to process real-time radar, camera and lidar data streams.

Infotainment platforms require direct physical integration between compute chips and memory packages to minimize data latency. Packaging automotive DRAM alongside central processing units ensures responsive touch interfaces and smooth split-screen rendering on dashboard monitors.

Commercial shipments of the fifth-generation Snapdragon Digital Chassis will ramp across global automaker production schedules during fiscal 2027, Qualcomm said. The new architecture expands on-device artificial intelligence computing capacity across connected vehicle cockpits.

The regulatory filing does not disclose specific component purchase volumes, contract values or whether Samsung's next-generation LPDDR5 chips have entered production vehicles. Neither company published pricing terms or detailed supply quotas for specific vehicle lines.

Automakers deploying Qualcomm's cockpit solutions are scheduled to introduce production vehicles containing the integrated computing hardware in the first quarter of 2027.
