LX Semicon posted its first quarterly operating loss since listing in 2010 on Nov. 6, 2026, reviewing third-quarter losses of 15.56 billion won ($11.3 million) as display chip prices fell.

The operating deficit compared with an operating profit of 14.03 billion won in the third quarter of 2025. Revenue fell 14.8% year-on-year to 336.02 billion won ($244 million), according to the company's regulatory filing.

Sequential revenue dropped 16.2% from the second quarter, while the net loss reached 11.17 billion won ($8.1 million). Pre-tax losses stood at 15.46 billion won.

The quarterly operating margin fell to minus 4.6%, down from positive 3.6% in the prior-year period. Gross profit dropped 32.2% year-on-year to 81.6 billion won ($59.2 million).

Gross margin contracted by 6.2 percentage points to 24.3%, down from 30.5% a year earlier. Operating profit for the first nine months fell 67.8% year-on-year to 27.04 billion won ($19.6 million).

Nine-month revenue fell 9.9% to 1.13 trillion won ($819 million). Cumulative net income through September stood at 17.9 billion won, down 71.9% from the first nine months of 2025.

Annual sales have contracted for three consecutive years. Revenue slipped from 2.12 trillion won in 2022 to 1.90 trillion won in 2023, 1.87 trillion won in 2024 and 1.64 trillion won in 2025.

The company was established as Silicon Works in 1999 and listed on the Kosdaq exchange in 2010. The third-quarter loss represents the first quarterly operating deficit in its 16-year listed history.

LX Semicon designs display driver integrated circuits, which process pixel commands and deliver drive currents across screen panels. The fabless company contracts manufacturing out to commercial wafer foundries.

Display driver chips generated 81% of sales in the quarter. Large display drivers for televisions contributed 44% of revenue, while small drivers for smartphones represented 37%.

By end application, smartphone and mobile device panels generated 37% of revenue. Television panels represented 32% of third-quarter sales, while personal computer and tablet monitors made up 24%.

Television share rose from 25% a year earlier as panel makers bought basic chips. Mobile revenue share declined from 40%, while personal computer and tablet screen share fell from 29%.

Device manufacturers pushed down component procurement prices as memory prices increased, the company said in its filing. Sluggish end-user purchases of electronic hardware constrained panel manufacturing schedules.

Adverse foreign exchange fluctuations also weighed on operating margins during the quarter, the company said. Finished goods buyers delayed procurement cycles as exchange volatility shifted import pricing.

Elevated wafer fees at commercial foundries prevented LX Semicon from lowering unit production costs. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell 8.6% year-on-year to 97.2 billion won, but failed to avert the loss.

Competition in mobile organic light-emitting diode driver chips intensified during the quarter. Taiwan-based Novatek Microelectronics expanded supply allocations at Apple, weakening LX Semicon's position in smartphone display supply chains.

Captive display panel client LG Display maintained strict utilization controls on production lines to manage inventory. Reduced panel output cut demand for LX Semicon driver chips.

The company maintained a cash buffer despite quarterly losses. Cash and cash equivalents rose 10.2% from late 2025 to 494.5 billion won ($359 million) by late September.

The debt-to-equity ratio improved to 20.4%, down from 24.4% at the end of 2025. Working capital controls and receivables collection helped protect balance-sheet liquidity.

The company's board of directors nominated Jun-ho Na as chief executive during an executive reshuffle on Nov. 3. Na currently heads the strategic marketing division as executive vice president.

Na replaces Yoon-tae Lee, a former Samsung Electronics executive who served as chief executive for three years. The board also appointed Moon-seok Kang, principal research engineer, to the board of directors.

Na joined Silicon Works in 2001 after starting at LG Semicon in 1994. He previously directed driver chip engineering, large panel product teams and television business operations before leading strategic marketing.

The leadership change reflects pressure to accelerate business diversification away from consumer screens. LX Semicon is redirecting engineering resources into automotive microcontrollers and heat-dissipating substrates for vehicle power modules.

The company previously restructured its portfolio by halting internal development of silicon carbide power devices. It redirected capital toward automotive microcontrollers and ceramic heat-dissipation substrates instead.

LX Semicon supplies automotive microcontrollers to Hyundai Motor and Kia for vehicle body control systems. Non-display components still represent less than 10% of revenue, limiting their contribution to overall earnings.

Longer automotive qualification cycles mean new vehicular chips require years to match consumer display volumes. That transition window leaves company earnings vulnerable to swings in consumer electronics demand.

The regulatory filing does not state the wafer fabrication costs paid to foundry suppliers. LX Semicon has not disclosed the volume split between LG Display and third-party panel manufacturers.

LX Semicon must submit its reviewed third-quarter report to financial regulators by Nov. 16, 2026. Na's appointment as chief executive remains subject to approval at a shareholders meeting in March 2027.
