SFA Engineering signed a cooperation agreement with Rainbow Robotics on Sept. 30 to co-develop artificial intelligence industrial robots designed for unmanned manufacturing and logistics operations.

SFA supplies cleanroom transport systems to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, while Rainbow Robotics produces collaborative robot arms and dual-arm mobile platforms.

The equipment maker installed two RB-Y1 mobile dual-arm humanoid robots at its newly opened Asan test facility, targeting the 20% to 30% of warehouse handling tasks that conventional suction grippers cannot perform.

SFA will operate as the systems integrator, combining its proprietary factory logistics software, artificial intelligence vision and dexterous mechanical grippers with robotic mechanisms from Rainbow Robotics.

Rainbow Robotics will provide robot mechanical structures and ultra-precision motion control systems, focusing on multi-axis coordinated manipulation for production floors.

The companies signed the memorandum of understanding at SFA's manufacturing campus in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, alongside the opening of SFA's ART Innovation Center.

The test center serves as an operational testbed where engineers evaluate automated guided vehicles, ceiling conveyors and robotic manipulators under real industrial floor conditions.

Current warehouse automation relies on vacuum suction cups that handle 70% to 80% of uniform packaged goods, leaving irregular cartons and flexible parcels to human manual labor.

The RB-Y1 units deployed at the center execute pick-and-place trials, using two coordinated arms to secure shifting cargo and transfer items between sorting racks.

Each RB-Y1 robot features 24 degrees of freedom across its upper torso and arms, mounted on a wheeled base that moves through narrow factory aisles.

SFA already manufactures overhead hoist transport systems, automated stockers and vertical transfer lifts that move semiconductor wafer pods inside cleanrooms.

Adding dual-arm robotic manipulators allows the supplier to expand beyond rail-bound wafer and flat-panel transport into dynamic box loading and part sorting.

The commercial roadmap sets early 2027 as the target date to select customer production lines and deploy commercialized robot cells into distribution hubs.

The project establishes a long-term milestone of reaching fully autonomous, unmanned operations across customer factory and warehouse networks by 2030.

SFA plans to purchase hardware platforms directly from Rainbow Robotics and customize control software to client specifications, rather than designing robot mechanical arms in-house.

SFA Chief Executive Kim Sang-kyung said the company chose an integrator business model to deliver practical production tools rapidly instead of building broad general-purpose humanoids.

The alliance gives Rainbow Robotics a direct sales channel into high-volume manufacturing lines operated by SFA's established industrial clients.

Samsung Electronics holds a 14.8% equity stake in Rainbow Robotics with options to acquire control, tying the robot builder closely to broader industrial automation programs.

SFA generates the majority of its revenue from turnkey automation contracts for rechargeable battery lines, display manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication facilities.

Engineers at the Asan facility are conducting sensor fusion tests that combine three-dimensional cameras with predictive maintenance algorithms to prevent line stoppages.

The system connects robot manipulator arms to ceiling-mounted rail networks, enabling continuous handoffs from overhead transport carriers to floor-level assembly stations.

Proof-of-concept testing at the Asan center includes unloading freight containers, sorting parcels with irregular center-of-gravity shifts and handling delicate electronic components.

Rainbow Robotics manufactures six-axis collaborative arms, mobile platforms and quadruped robots at its production facilities in Sejong.

The companies did not publish contract values, minimum purchase commitments or hardware unit pricing under the preliminary memorandum of understanding.

SFA plans to complete joint verification trials at the ART Innovation Center before finalizing commercial line deployments with retail logistics operators in early 2027.
