SFA and Rainbow Robotics signed an agreement Sept. 30 to co-develop autonomous manufacturing systems, aiming to deploy fully unmanned logistics across advanced cleanroom production lines by 2030.

The partnership links South Korea's largest domestic cleanroom automation provider with a leading robotics engineering firm. SFA generated 1.63 trillion won ($1.2 billion) in revenue in 2025, supplying factory material handling systems.

Rainbow Robotics generated 34.12 billion won ($25.3 million) in revenue in 2025. Samsung Electronics holds a 35% equity stake in the company, making it the primary strategic hardware affiliate within the conglomerate's robotics push.

SFA Chief Executive Kim Sang-kyeong and Rainbow Robotics Chief Executive Lee Jung-ho signed the memorandum of understanding at SFA's manufacturing plant in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, SFA said.

Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly conduct research and development on artificial intelligence-driven manufacturing platforms. They also agreed to coordinate joint sales and marketing initiatives across global industrial markets.

The collaboration focuses on pairing SFA's factory software with Rainbow Robotics' mechanical hardware. SFA supplies supervisory software and operating systems that route automated guided vehicles and cleanroom stockers.

Rainbow Robotics designs collaborative robotic arms, dual-arm mobile manipulators and ultra-precision motion control software. The company manufactures its own core mechatronics components, including actuators, encoders and drive controllers.

SFA has pursued an internal strategy to bring all core material handling and robotics technologies in-house, the company said. The initiative aims to automate factory operations where human workers still intervene.

Beyond conventional transport vehicles, SFA has developed human-like robotic hands that replicate human grip dexterity. It also designs machine vision tools, dual-arm mobile robots and automated loading and unloading units.

Conventional cleanroom transport relies on overhead hoist transport tracks and automated guided vehicles that move containers between fixed bays. These systems cannot pick, place or reorient loose mechanical components without human assistance.

Integrating Rainbow Robotics' multi-joint arms onto mobile platforms allows machines to load and unload processing tools directly. The companies plan to deploy vision-guided grasping to handle irregular parts.

SFA previously established an internal milestone to achieve full-autonomous manufacturing and logistics across its client base by 2030. The company said the partnership with Rainbow Robotics is designed to shorten the development cycle.

Semiconductor fabrication plants and electric vehicle battery factories in South Korea face growing pressure to eliminate human cleanroom labor. Fabs operate under stringent particulate limits where human presence remains a leading cause of yield contamination.

Battery pouch and prismatic cell assembly plants also require heavy material loading in dry rooms that present occupational fatigue risks. Full automation aims to lower labor overhead and raise line availability across multi-shift production cycles.

Asian semiconductor cleanrooms rely heavily on Japanese equipment suppliers. Daifuku and Murata Machinery hold substantial market share in overhead hoist transport networks and automated storage retrievable systems across Korean wafer fabs.

SFA has sought to displace foreign vendors by supplying domestic wafer and panel logistics networks. Teaming with Rainbow Robotics allows SFA to pitch integrated robotic manipulation alongside standard transport tracks.

For Rainbow Robotics, the agreement opens an industrial hardware deployment channel through SFA's existing production line integration contracts. The robotics developer has targeted factory automation to diversify beyond commercial food service arms.

Samsung Electronics acquired its 35% stake in Rainbow Robotics to secure automation technology for its semiconductor and device plants. SFA maintains long-standing equipment integration relationships with Samsung display and electronics affiliates.

The commercial alignment creates an operational pathway to test joint robotics solutions on domestic production lines. The systems must meet micro-vibration, particulate emission and communication latency standards before entering high-volume fabrication lines.

SFA said the joint development schedule works toward its corporate target of delivering fully unmanned manufacturing and logistics platforms by 2030. SFA is scheduled to report third-quarter financial results on Nov. 13, 2026.

The companies did not disclose financial terms, capital investments or contract values for the collaboration, and neither party announced binding volume quotas. SFA and Rainbow Robotics did not file regulatory disclosures on the Korea Exchange regarding the non-binding pact.

South Korean financial regulations do not mandate public exchange filings for non-binding memorandums of understanding that lack immediate capital transfers. Definitive commercial terms remain contingent on future supply contracts between the two companies.

SFA continues to manufacture cleanroom material handling equipment at its Asan and Cheonan plants, while Rainbow Robotics conducts actuator assembly in Daejeon.
