Hyundai Mobis expanded its open-innovation drive into China on Oct. 15, holding its first regional robotics technology conference in Shanghai to recruit hardware suppliers and physical artificial intelligence partners.

Roughly 300 executives from Chinese automakers, robotics component startups and global investment institutions attended the gathering on Oct. 14, the South Korean parts maker said.

The company organized the event under the theme of robotics and physical AI, seeking partnerships in precision actuators, sensor integration and automated control algorithms across the Yangtze River Delta industrial belt.

Hyundai Mobis selected Shanghai for its first overseas sourcing summit outside the United States because the surrounding Yangtze River Delta cluster concentrates precision motor manufacturers, cycloidal gear machine shops and specialized foundries.

The supplier previously held its annual Mobis Mobility Day exclusively in Silicon Valley, where its venture capital arm scouted North American software developers and automotive semiconductor designers starting in 2022.

Expanding the program to China marks the company's first formal effort to build an Asian component-sourcing network specifically for humanoid robotics, according to conference materials distributed at the venue.

Executives focused panel sessions on precise robotic hand mechanisms and joint modules, which require miniature electric motors and durable strain wave gears that Chinese vendors produce at high volumes.

Hyundai Mobis booked its first external robotics component client in January at CES, winning an agreement to manufacture high-torque joint actuators for Boston Dynamics' next-generation electric Atlas humanoid robot.

That contract validated the company's ability to repurpose automotive chassis motors into robotic joints, but management faces cost pressures as global automakers evaluate humanoid deployment on factory assembly floors.

Automotive components supplied to affiliates and global original equipment manufacturers generated the majority of the firm's 16.32 trillion won ($11.8 billion) in revenue during the second quarter.

Operating profit reached 975.2 billion won ($705 million) during the same period, providing capital reserves to finance proof-of-concept testing and minority equity stakes in robotics ventures.

The open-innovation strategy follows a three-stage pathway, identifying early-stage hardware developers, funding proof-of-concept demonstrations and executing commercial procurement contracts or direct equity investments, the company said.

Mobis Ventures, the company's corporate investment arm in Silicon Valley, deployed 190.1 billion won ($137 million) into overseas startups over the past six years, according to corporate filings.

The company plans to pair that Silicon Valley software network with Chinese hardware suppliers, aiming to secure low-cost components for physical AI systems that require rapid mechanical prototyping.

Physical AI combines generative machine-learning models with electromechanical hardware, enabling humanoid robots and industrial arms to interpret sensory inputs and manipulate physical objects in unstructured manufacturing or warehouse environments.

Hyundai Mobis previously showcased 40 factory automation systems, including vision-guided mobile transport robots, during its M-Sphere manufacturing technology exhibition at its Quantum Center in Uiwang on Aug. 27.

While that domestic showcase concentrated on factory logistics, the Shanghai meetings targeted external component sales to third-party robot builders across China and international automation markets, attendees said.

Following the open presentations on Oct. 14, Hyundai Mobis held separate closed-door bilateral meetings with shortlisted Chinese robotics firms to review joint development timelines and potential component supply contracts, the company said.

Chinese robotics developers have lowered manufacturing costs by sourcing local cycloidal pinwheel reducers, magnetic encoders and brushless direct-current motors, creating pricing benchmarks that Western and South Korean parts makers must match.

By integrating vetted Chinese parts into its actuator assemblies, Hyundai Mobis aims to supply tier-1 automotive plants and external robotics builders with lower-cost modules without sacrificing endurance specifications.

The company will monitor follow-up discussions from the Shanghai summit and decide in early 2027 whether to host the Asian event on an annual schedule, executives said.

The announcement does not name the Chinese companies invited to the closed-door sessions, and Hyundai Mobis has not published financial targets or contract values tied to the Shanghai meetings.

Engineering teams from Hyundai Mobis and Boston Dynamics remain on schedule to begin volume validation of the Atlas humanoid actuators under the joint development timetable set in January.
