FANUC accelerated its push into heavy end-of-line packaging on Sept. 3, 2026, as manufacturing data showed rising adoption of its 40-kilogram collaborative palletizing configuration across food and logistics plants.

The Japanese robotics manufacturer previously limited collaborative handling to 30 kilograms on its CRX series. Heavy case handling previously required manufacturers to install rigid safety fencing around standard six-axis industrial arms.

FANUC America first announced the 40-kilogram capability on April 20, 2026. The company engineered the rating by pairing its existing CRX-30iA collaborative arm with a high-flow pneumatic air kit for wrist-down suction grippers.

The upgrade is not a separate robot arm. The specialized air kit increases pneumatic airflow throughput, allowing large suction cups to hold heavy boxes, plastic totes and bulk packages during downward motions.

The CRX-30iA features a 1,756-millimeter reach and a mechanical weight of 135 kilograms. Its underflip motion enables the arm to rotate through its own axis, conserving physical floor area in tight packaging corridors.

FANUC maintains an eight-year zero-maintenance specification on the mechanical unit. The cobot operates on FANUC's R-30iB Plus controller and its newer R-50iA platform, which adds Python scripting and ROS 2 motion streaming.

For sanitary processing lines, FANUC supplies a food-grade variant of the CRX-30iA. The machine incorporates NSF-H1 registered food-grade grease, chemical-resistant white epoxy paint, rust-resistant exterior plating and IP67 dust and water protection.

Those specifications allow direct caustic washdowns in protein, dairy and beverage facilities. Processors previously hesitated to install collaborative robots in washdown areas because sanitizing chemicals degrade unsealed joints and standard industrial coatings.

During the same April 20 launch, FANUC introduced the ultra-lightweight CRX-3iA to cover the lower end of factory automation. That unit weighs 11 kilograms and handles three-kilogram payloads across a 692-millimeter working radius.

The lightweight model supports magnetic base mounting on walls and ceilings. Built-in sensors automatically detect the mounting angle, allowing operators to move the robot between assembly and screwdriving stations without recalibrating coordinates manually.

FANUC also rolled out advanced welding profiles across the CRX lineup. A triangle-weave motion pattern counteracts weld puddle sag during vertical-up passes, automating complex joint work without requiring specialized programmer input.

For heavier material movement, the company added a high-inertia software mode. The program lets operators manually guide massive workpieces while a connected mechanical hoist carries the physical load, preventing musculoskeletal strain during part transfer.

The CRX platform also added dual nut-runner capabilities with internal cable routing. Assembly lines can fasten two threaded bolts simultaneously while keeping wiring enclosed to avoid catching on surrounding equipment.

Market research firm Fact.MR reported Sept. 3, 2026 that the hygienic cobot palletizer sector will expand from $880 million in 2026 to $4.23 billion by 2036. That projection represents a 17.0% compound annual growth rate.

The market was valued at $752.1 million in 2025, according to the research group. Rising labor costs and high employee turnover in cold storage have driven plant operators toward automated pallet stacking.

Lightweight handling remains the foundation of collaborative automation. Applications requiring payloads under 10 kilograms represent 46.0% of total hygienic cobot demand in 2026, the report stated.

The expansion to 40 kilograms addresses the remaining bulk of commercial packaging lines. Corrugated shipping cartons containing liquid jugs, canned goods and frozen produce routinely weigh between 15 and 35 kilograms.

Conventional industrial palletizers handling those loads require heavy physical cages, light curtains and safety interlocks. Those barriers occupy wide footprints in refrigerated facilities where chilled warehouse square footage commands premium real-estate rates.

Collaborative cells eliminate physical fencing by using sensitive torque sensors to stop movement upon contact. That safety mechanism allows palletizing units to operate beside human packers and autonomous mobile carts.

System integrators have begun pairing the CRX-30iA with mobile robot bases for autonomous depalletizing. These mobile cells use artificial intelligence vision to recognize mixed-case pallets and unload inventory directly at warehouse receiving docks.

Plant deployment success still depends on factors beyond the robot arm's rated capacity. Sanitization documentation, specialized food-grade vacuum cups, sloped drainage surfaces and plant electrical safety compliance govern final regulatory approval.

FANUC equips the CRX-30iA with customizable teaching buttons directly on the J6 wrist flange. Operators can record pallet positions by hand-guiding the tooling head, eliminating the need to write line code on external programming pendants.
