SK Innovation confirmed on Oct. 30, 2026, that battery subsidiary SK On returned to an operating loss, forcing a retreat from greenfield capital spending across its global factory network.

The decision marks a sharp operational shift for South Korea's third-largest battery maker. Slumping electric vehicle deliveries across North America and Europe have undercut cell revenues while legacy construction commitments strain corporate balance sheets.

SK Innovation posted a record consolidated operating profit of 3.7043 trillion won ($2.69 billion) on revenue of 28.7738 trillion won ($20.9 billion). Refining and lubricant units generated 61.9% of that operating profit, offsetting heavy cash drains from clean-energy divisions.

SK On generated 1.5263 trillion won ($1.11 billion) in third-quarter revenue, falling 48.2% from the preceding quarter. The battery division booked an operating loss of 80.5 billion won ($58.4 million), reversing a brief period of profitability.

The unit had logged an 821.8 billion won operating profit in the second quarter, lifted by one-time customer compensation payments. Stripping out that settlement, underlying factory operations remained in deficit throughout the year, the company said.

The quarterly operating deficit narrowed by 44.3 billion won from the 124.8 billion won loss recorded a year earlier. Operating margins improved by 1.0 percentage point to minus 5.3% as factory scrap rates stabilized, the company said.

Automakers have pulled back orders as showroom demand for pure electric cars cools across Western markets. Slower assembly schedules at Ford Motor Company and other volume customers left pouch cell lines underutilized across South Korea and the United States.

SK Innovation executives said during an investor briefing that managing liquidity now takes priority over aggressive capacity additions. The parent company will slow construction outlays and limit external debt accumulation across its battery manufacturing network.

Rather than building new facilities, SK On plans to repurpose idle production lines for energy storage systems. The pivot targets utility grid storage projects, where commercial demand remains resilient despite the electric vehicle sales slump.

SK On will convert existing automotive pouch cell lines at its Seosan Plant 2 in South Korea to lithium iron phosphate chemistry. Technicians will complete tooling adjustments to accommodate stationary energy storage formats, the company said.

The company will carry out identical production line modifications at its manufacturing complex in Commerce, Georgia. Converting operating lines spares billions of dollars in fresh steel, cleanroom construction and utility connection expenses, executives said.

Energy storage systems use lithium iron phosphate cells to lower fire risk and extend cycle life. Chinese battery manufacturers have historically dominated that chemistry, holding over 85% of global grid storage installations.

SK On aims to bypass Chinese market dominance in North America by supplying domestic utilities seeking tariff-exempt hardware. United States federal rules penalize grid operators that procure critical energy storage components directly from Chinese cell suppliers.

The commercial anchor for the strategy is a supply contract signed with American energy storage provider NeoVolta Power. Under the agreement, SK On will deliver 9 gigawatt-hours of lithium iron phosphate pouch cells over five years.

The NeoVolta Power contract represents nearly half of the 20 gigawatt-hour energy storage order target SK On outlined earlier this year. Output will ship from converted lines at the Georgia manufacturing plant starting in 2027, the company said.

SK On has lined up domestic upstream partners to supply raw materials for its revised chemistry roadmap. The battery maker signed supply agreements with cathode producers L&F and POSCO Future M for lithium iron phosphate active materials.

Parent group cash flow provides crucial breathing room while battery restructuring runs its course. Refining subsidiary SK Energy generated 1.2058 trillion won ($875 million) in quarterly operating profit, buoyed by tight global diesel fuel supplies.

Lubricant subsidiary SK Enmove posted a record quarterly operating profit of 1.0906 trillion won ($792 million). Group energy trading operations capitalized on regional petroleum product deficits caused by Middle Eastern refinery outages and export restrictions.

Those windfall hydrocarbon profits absorbed the 80.5 billion won battery deficit and an additional 36.8 billion won loss at separator subsidiary SK IE Technology. Without fossil-fuel margins, debt service costs would have forced more drastic factory halts.

BlueOval SK, the North American manufacturing joint venture between SK On and Ford Motor Company, remains the company's heaviest capital obligation. The venture is completing plants in Kentucky and Tennessee designed to produce advanced nickel-cobalt-manganese cells.

Ford Motor Company has deferred electric sport-utility vehicle production schedules, lowering near-term battery intake requirements. The joint venture has recalibrated equipment installation phases to match slower pickup truck and commercial van assembly lines.

Industry analysts estimate South Korean battery manufacturers must operate assembly lines above 70% capacity to break even. SK On has run several production facilities below that threshold during the prolonged vehicle demand trough, according to supply chain trackers.

The company is negotiating with regional utilities and renewable project developers across South Korea and North America to secure additional storage volume. Management expects energy storage sales to offset electric vehicle volume deficits over the next two years.

SK On anticipates a gradual recovery in electric vehicle cell shipments during the fourth quarter of 2026. European automakers face tighter fleet emissions penalties starting in 2027, prompting car companies to stabilize battery orders before year-end.

Deliveries under the NeoVolta Power contract begin in January 2027, while line conversions at Seosan and Georgia enter validation trials throughout 2027.

The regulatory filing does not state total revised capital expenditure figures for 2026 or 2027, and SK Innovation has not published an aggregate order target for its energy storage business.
