Nio Inc. prepared a larger 60-kilowatt-hour battery pack for its Firefly small electric vehicle brand on Oct. 17, 2026, following marketing disclosures confirming an official product debut scheduled for Oct. 23.

The new pack expands battery capacity by roughly 43% over the entry-level 42.1-kWh unit. Sourced from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the 60-kWh module lifts rated driving range under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) from 420 kilometers to 560 kilometers.

Pu Yang, head of brand marketing for Firefly, disclosed the battery launch on Oct. 16 during a user event in Zhengzhou, Henan province. The brand gathered customers to mark cumulative deliveries reaching 90,000 vehicles.

The pack will be available as an option on newly ordered vehicles and as an aftermarket hardware upgrade for existing owners. Daniel Jin, head of the Firefly sub-brand, confirmed that the 60-kWh module shares identical external dimensions, underbody mounts and bolt points with the original 42.1-kWh pack.

The physical parity allows workshops and automated swap stations to install the larger battery into any of the 90,000 Firefly hatchbacks already on the road. The existing 42.1-kWh pack relies on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry built by Sunwoda Electronic Co.

The upcoming 60-kWh variant shifts to CATL's ternary lithium nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) chemistry. Ternary chemistry provides the volumetric energy density required to fit 17.9 additional kilowatt-hours inside the compact car's existing underfloor enclosure.

The battery launch builds on an infrastructure expansion that opened automated swapping to the brand. Nio brought its first fifth-generation swap facility online on Aug. 7, 2026, in Quanzhou, Fujian province, representing the company's 4,000th battery swap station in China.

Firefly cars measure 4,003 millimeters in total length and could not use first- through fourth-generation stations because their narrow track and 2,615-millimeter wheelbase did not fit the mechanical carriages. The fifth-generation design incorporates flexible mechanical positioners capable of handling vehicle wheelbases ranging up to 3.5 meters.

The shared station design lets vehicles from the premium Nio marque, the family-focused Onvo line and the compact Firefly lineup use the same physical bays. The platform cuts swap cycle duration to one minute and 48 seconds while raising maximum station throughput to 500 pack exchanges per day.

Firefly is becoming an increasingly large driver of volume for its parent automaker. The sub-brand delivered a record 7,327 hatchbacks in September, an increase of 26.9% year-on-year.

Across the first nine months of 2026, Firefly handed over 48,122 vehicles, representing 16.02% of Nio's aggregate corporate deliveries. The brand gives the carmaker access to price tiers below 150,000 yuan ($21,100), where urban drivers frequently lack private charging stalls.

The modular pack approach underpins Firefly's export plans for Southeast Asia and Europe. By decoupling the battery from the chassis through its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription model, Firefly can sell vehicles at lower upfront transaction prices while letting owners rent battery capacity based on travel requirements.

CATL takes immediate supply exposure through the contract. CATL already manufactures swappable high-capacity packs for Nio's premium models and signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Nio in March 2025 to develop unified battery standards.

Sunwoda faces a corresponding ceiling on its share of Firefly's battery procurement. Sunwoda, which supplied the initial run of 42.1-kWh LFP packs, had gained its first passenger vehicle supply deal with Nio through the compact model.

Commercial terms and consumer pricing will change next week. Nio will formally launch the 60-kWh pack on Oct. 23, 2026, when it releases retail upgrade costs and monthly BaaS subscription rates for the ternary battery.

The company has not stated whether the 60-kWh pack will be offered in European export markets at launch, and regulatory filings have not published the curb weight penalty associated with the denser ternary module.
