LG Energy Solution moved to widen its North American order pipeline on Oct. 6, detailing an agreement with Indigo Technologies to supply 46-series cylindrical batteries for commercial electric vans.

The pact outlines battery deliveries running from 2027 through 2030. The cells will power two purpose-built commercial models under development by the Massachusetts-based vehicle maker, known formally as indiGOTech.

The non-binding memorandum of understanding targets an expanding delivery segment. The global electric van market stood at $16.3 billion in 2024 and will reach $65.6 billion by 2034, according to Global Market Insights.

The agreement diversifies customer exposure for LG Energy Solution, which trades under ticker 373220.KS on the Korea Exchange. The manufacturer previously concentrated its 46-millimeter cylindrical cell pipeline primarily on passenger vehicle clients like Tesla and Rivian.

Cylindrical cell shipments at LG Energy Solution climbed 50% year-on-year during the second quarter of 2026, the company said. That division books rising volumes as assembly lines scale up output.

Indigo Technologies designs light commercial vehicles for last-mile delivery and urban ride-hailing fleets. The startup was founded in 2010 and operates from headquarters in Woburn, Massachusetts.

The initial cell allocations will support Indigo's Flow Ride passenger van and Flow Cargo transport vehicle. Both platforms use proprietary wheel assemblies that integrate traction motors and active suspension inside each wheel rim.

The wheel system, branded SmartWheels, eliminates conventional transverse axles and bulky chassis subframes. That configuration frees flat floor space inside the cabin and reduces total curb weight.

Light commercial vans require heavy payload support and continuous daily duty cycles. Those operating demands expose batteries to repeated stress from rapid discharge and recurring fast-charging sessions.

South Korean battery producers have historically supplied pouch cells to commercial van platforms. The Indigo partnership marks an operational shift toward larger cylindrical cells that offer mechanical rigidity and high volumetric density.

A 46-series cylindrical cell measures 46 millimeters in diameter, compared with 21 millimeters for standard industrial cells. The wider canister accommodates greater active material volume while simplifying pack integration.

LG Energy Solution plans to supply cells using nickel-cobalt-manganese cathode chemistry. The design incorporates tabless current collection to lower internal electrical resistance and minimize internal heat generation.

Chinese battery producers currently dominate international commercial vehicle sales with lithium iron phosphate chemistry packed into prismatic or pouch envelopes. Those packs offer lower material cost but carry lower energy density per unit weight.

The 46-series architecture provides higher energy density and allows rapid heat dissipation during direct-current fast charging. The partners will run technical validation programs to verify vehicle thermal balance and reduce terminal charging duration.

The commercial supply agreement aligns directly with LG Energy Solution's capital expenditure program in the United States. The company is building an independent cylindrical cell manufacturing plant in Queen Creek, Arizona.

The Arizona factory will begin commercial operations before the end of 2026, the company said. Local production protects downstream buyers from transpacific freight logistics and satisfies domestic manufacturing rules under United States tax laws.

Securing customer commitments ahead of plant commissioning reduces operational risk at the Arizona site. Factory utilization determines profitability during the first two years of operation for any new battery line.

Commercial fleet operators manage purchases based strictly on total cost of ownership. Battery pack endurance and fast-turnaround charging determine vehicle operational uptime and driver earning rates.

Urban ride-hailing and parcel delivery platforms cannot scale without purpose-built vehicles and dedicated infrastructure, Indigo Technologies Chief Executive Will Graylin said. Standard passenger electric cars often fail commercial delivery durability requirements, Graylin said.

Senior Vice President Kim Nak-jin represented LG Energy Solution during the agreement signing. Kim oversees product planning and business strategy within the company's small battery business division.

The technical partnership tests whether large cylindrical cells can displace pouch architectures in light delivery fleets. Fleet managers favor cylindrical canisters because rigid metal casings withstand physical road vibrations better than flexible laminated pouches.

Binding commercial terms remain subject to final procurement negotiations. Supply volumes, cell pricing schedules and binding capital commitments were not disclosed in the agreement announcement, and neither company has published contract values.

Commercial cell shipments under the prospective agreement are scheduled to run from 2027 through 2030, following the planned commissioning of LG Energy Solution's Queen Creek factory in Arizona before the end of 2026.
