# Corvus Energy and BYD introduce Blue Whale marine LFP battery system

Corvus Energy AS presented the Blue Whale NxtGen Power marine battery system on Sept. 2, 2026, marking the commercial debut of its lithium iron phosphate partnership with BYD Energy Storage.

The two manufacturers introduced the containerized system at the SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg, Germany. The presentation followed an initial commercial product disclosure released from Bergen, Norway, on Aug. 27, 2026.

Under the joint development agreement, BYD Energy Storage supplies the lithium iron phosphate cells and manufactures the core cell stacks. The Chinese manufacturer builds the subassemblies at its specialized industrial facilities in Shenzhen.

Corvus Energy oversees total system architecture, battery management hardware, cyber defense protocols and fire containment systems. The Norwegian firm conducts final assembly, factory acceptance tests and global field service from its European operations.

The new battery package relies on high discharge rates to supply sudden bursts of electrical current. That design serves vessels where operational cycles depend on high power output rather than extended onboard energy storage between charging cycles, Corvus Energy said.

Target applications include harbor tugs, commercial workboats, offshore support vessels and double-ended passenger ferries. Harbor vessels frequently encounter sharp power spikes while guiding container carriers or holding fixed coordinates in rough sea conditions.

The product launch marks the culmination of a joint engineering program initiated nine months earlier. Corvus Energy and BYD signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding on Dec. 9, 2025, establishing an exploratory marine battery framework.

The partners formalized their commercial ties on May 13, 2026, by signing a binding strategic cooperation agreement. That contract signing took place during the China International Battery Fair exhibition in Shenzhen.

The agreement created an industrial mechanism to integrate Chinese mass-market cell chemistry with European maritime type-approval standards. Chinese battery companies have faced regulatory and certification hurdles when selling directly to Western shipbuilders.

Corvus Energy holds the largest operational footprint in the global maritime battery industry. The supplier has delivered energy storage packages to more than 1,400 marine projects since introducing its first commercial battery pack in 2010.

Equipment manufactured by Corvus Energy powers more than 50% of the hybrid and battery-electric commercial vessels worldwide. The company previously relied on nickel manganese cobalt chemistries for most of its offshore and passenger vessel deliveries.

BYD Energy Storage began commercial operations in 2008, initially focusing on stationary electrical grids and utility installations. The business unit operates under BYD Company Limited, the second-largest battery manufacturer in China by annual cell output.

Chinese battery producers have looked toward maritime and heavy transport markets as domestic electric car price competition erodes factory margins. Marine propulsion systems carry higher per-megawatt gross margins than light passenger vehicle packs.

Lithium iron phosphate chemistries do not use nickel or cobalt in the positive electrode. That chemical formulation reduces thermal runaway risks and lowers raw cathode material costs compared to traditional ternary lithium chemistries, according to technical disclosures.

Earlier naval installations avoided lithium iron phosphate because of lower volumetric energy density. Recent advances in cell design and structural packaging now allow shipyards to install larger iron-phosphate blocks without compromising ship stability or cargo displacement.

The Blue Whale NxtGen Power integrates Corvus Energy's proprietary battery management system and digital telemetry. The software package monitors cell voltages, operating temperatures and internal resistance in real time to prevent thermal propagation across modules.

Each battery pack includes an automated digital battery passport compliant with European Union supply chain tracing regulations. The digital record documents raw material sourcing, factory carbon footprints and cumulative degradation cycles throughout the operational life of the vessel.

Stricter global emissions rules are driving commercial ship operators toward hybrid and all-electric propulsion systems. The International Maritime Organization has set targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international commercial fleets by or around 2050.

Regional operating penalties are accelerating that transition across Europe. The European Union emissions trading system began assessing carbon surcharges on large commercial vessels in 2024, raising voyage operating costs for vessels burning conventional heavy fuel oil.

Major ports across northern Europe and North America have also implemented zero-emission berthing mandates. Those local air quality ordinances require tugs, workboats and ferries to shut down diesel auxiliary engines during harbor maneuvers and shore docking.

Other Chinese battery makers are expanding their marine businesses to capture emerging harbor electrification demand. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited established a specialized marine division in 2022, supplying battery systems to domestic inland vessels and river freighters.

Corvus Energy will conduct validation tests and type-approval procedures for the Blue Whale NxtGen Power system with maritime classification societies ahead of commercial deliveries planned for 2027, the company said.
