Contemporary Amperex Technology finalized terms Sept. 19 to license battery pack manufacturing technology to Egyptian venture BME, backing an initial 1-gigawatt-hour assembly plant for heavy commercial vehicles.

The agreement marks the first Middle Eastern pack assembly partnership for CATL, the Chinese company that supplies more than a third of the world's electric vehicle batteries.

BME is developing and fully funding the manufacturing facility with an initial investment exceeding 2 billion Egyptian pounds ($39 million).
