BYD detailed commercial production specifications on Oct. 28 for its Denza N8 sport-utility vehicle, backing reservations with a battery that charges from 10% to 70% in five minutes.

The flagship vehicle pairs a 130.15-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack with 1,500-kilowatt direct-current charging. That battery delivers up to 1,003 kilometers of driving range under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle.

Regulatory filings approved by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in July show the five-seat vehicle measures 5,150 millimeters in length and 1,999 millimeters in width. The chassis wheelbase spans 3,075 millimeters.

The vehicle runs on BYD's e3 tri-motor platform with an 890-kilowatt combined powertrain output, equivalent to roughly 1,193 horsepower. A rear-wheel-drive base variant uses a single motor producing 320 kilowatts.

The charging system replenishes the battery from 10% to 70% within five minutes at rated megawatt stations, the company said. A charge from 10% to 97% takes nine minutes under normal operating conditions.

Low temperatures add three minutes to the charging cycle at minus 30 degrees Celsius, according to company technical documentation. The system relies on internal pulse heating within the second-generation Blade Battery cells.

Regulators also certified a smaller 105.792-kilowatt-hour battery pack for the Denza N8 platform. That smaller variant delivers between 800 and 840 kilometers of certified driving range depending on wheel configuration.

Denza opened customer reservations across China on Oct. 26 with a 2,000-yuan ($280) deposit. The company has positioned the vehicle in the 300,000-yuan to 400,000-yuan ($42,000 to $56,000) luxury segment.

The rollout places direct pressure on German luxury manufacturers in China. Mercedes-Benz and BMW historically generated more than 30% of their global operating profit from premium vehicle deliveries across Chinese metropolitan centers.

Mercedes-Benz previously owned a 50% equity stake in Denza when the venture was formed in 2010. The German automaker cut its holding to 10% in 2021 before exiting the partnership entirely in September 2024.

Foreign brands accounted for 62% of China's premium vehicle sales above 300,000 yuan in 2020. That market share dropped below 38% in the first half of 2026 as domestic high-voltage models multiplied.

Delivering 1,500-kilowatt charging speeds requires dedicated megawatt charging stations equipped with liquid-cooled cables and grid energy storage buffers. Standard public fast chargers across China operate between 120 and 360 kilowatts.

BYD is deploying proprietary liquid-cooled flash-charging terminals across major transport corridors to support the system. Peak draw from a single 1,500-kilowatt terminal equals the electricity demand of roughly 1,000 standard residential apartments.

High charging rates demand specialized cell architectures to prevent lithium plating and thermal runaway. BYD uses isotropic graphite anodes and high-conductivity electrolytes in the second-generation Blade pack to sustain high current density.

Rival domestic manufacturers are chasing similar charging metrics. Contemporary Amperex Technology sells 4C and 5C Shenxing LFP batteries to Zeekr and Li Auto, achieving 10% to 80% charge times in 10 to 12 minutes.

Tesla has limited its Model X charging speeds to 250 kilowatts on V3 Superchargers. The American automaker captured roughly 8% of China's luxury sport-utility vehicle deliveries during the third quarter of 2026.

Denza equipped the vehicle cabin with a 30-inch central display, dual 50-watt wireless charging pads and zero-gravity seating. The equipment list targets domestic business and family buyers who traditionally favored imported sedans.

The 1,500-kilowatt charging architecture requires silicon carbide power modules throughout the inverter and battery management system. BYD manufactures its own silicon carbide devices at facilities in Changsha and Ningbo.

Liquid cooling systems in the pack circulate coolant at elevated flow rates during flash charging. Sanhua Intelligent Controls and Yinlun Machinery supply heat-exchange assemblies to BYD under long-term production contracts.

Regulatory notices do not disclose the wholesale pack manufacturing cost or the durability limits of repeated five-minute charging cycles. Denza has not published full retail pricing for the production lineup.

Commercial showroom deliveries and final retail pricing will open across Chinese dealerships in November 2026.
