BYD saw its overseas electric-vehicle battery installations increase 66.5% to 39.7 gigawatt-hours between January and August, according to market data compiled by industry tracker SNE Research on Oct. 20, 2026.

The volume lifted BYD's share of the non-China market to 11.0%, up from 8.2% a year earlier. Total battery deployment across all vehicle manufacturers outside China reached 360.5 gigawatt-hours during the eight-month period.

The overseas surge cushioned a cooling home market. BYD registered 127.9 gigawatt-hours of total battery installations worldwide through August, a modest 6.2% rise that pulled its global market share down two percentage points to 15.1%.

Domestic demand slowed as electric vehicle deliveries inside China dropped 33.6%. BYD lost 4.04 percentage points of domestic installation share over the same period, according to figures from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance.

European buyers absorbed the largest single portion of the company's international volume. BYD deployed 14.5 gigawatt-hours of cells across Europe between January and August, representing an increase of 65.6% year-on-year.

Shipments across Asian markets outside China expanded 41.7% to 13.2 gigawatt-hours. South American registrations rose 138.5% to 6.2 gigawatt-hours, driven by passenger vehicle exports to Brazil.

Contemporary Amperex Technology, known as CATL, maintained the top spot outside China. CATL recorded 333.0 gigawatt-hours globally through August, expanding its total worldwide share by 1.7 percentage points to 39.4%.

Together, CATL and BYD controlled 44.7% of all battery capacity deployed in electric cars outside China. That represented a combined gain of 7.5 percentage points over the prior year.

The Chinese expansion eroded the standing of South Korea's three dominant cell manufacturers. LG Energy Solution, SK On and Samsung SDI saw their combined non-China market share drop 11.1 percentage points to 26.8%.

Their aggregate non-China installation volume contracted 12.8% to 96.5 gigawatt-hours. The losses were concentrated in the United States, where their regional installations fell 46.5% from 47.4 gigawatt-hours to 25.3 gigawatt-hours.

LG Energy Solution defended second place outside China with 58.1 gigawatt-hours, a 5.8% drop. The company's non-China market share fell 5.1 percentage points to 16.1% as its North American deliveries slumped 42.3%.

SK On installed 24.8 gigawatt-hours outside China, down 14.4% year-on-year. The decline lowered its non-China market share three percentage points to 6.9%, hurt by customer production cuts at Ford and Volkswagen.

Samsung SDI experienced an installation drop across North American contracts, including supply agreements with BMW and Rivian. Weaker uptake of premium electric models pulled down its cell deployment.

Japan's Panasonic held fourth place outside China with supply concentrated on Tesla. The company reshuffled its material procurement to lower exposure to Chinese mineral processing and protect its position in North America.

BYD relies on its proprietary Blade battery, an arrangement of thin lithium iron phosphate cells that lowers pack assembly costs. The chemistry avoids nickel and cobalt, reducing raw material exposure.

The automaker reinforced its European product rollout on Oct. 12 at the Paris Motor Show. BYD unveiled the Atto 8, a seven-seat sport-utility vehicle carrying a 115-kilowatt-hour second-generation Blade pack.

The vehicle incorporates charging hardware that replenishes the battery from 10% to 97% capacity in nine minutes, the company said. BYD plans to install fast chargers across European transit corridors.

The automaker is also localizing vehicle assembly to manage tariff exposure. The European Union applied countervailing duties on Chinese electric cars in 2024 to protect regional manufacturing.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said on Oct. 12 that the company is considering factory construction in France. BYD is currently building full-scale manufacturing facilities in Hungary and Thailand.

External vehicle manufacturers are also procuring cells from BYD's battery subsidiary, FinDreams. Supply contracts now cover commercial vehicles and passenger models built by Toyota and Suzuki.

European customer deliveries of the Atto 8 will begin in the first quarter of 2027, according to company product plans. BYD is scheduled to release its consolidated third-quarter financial report on Oct. 30.

The company has not published official overseas cell shipment volumes in its investor filings, leaving independent market research reports as the primary source for international installation figures. The European Commission has not published revisions to import duty rates on vehicles shipped from BYD's Chinese factories.
