BYD unveiled its seven-seat Atto 8 flagship electric sport utility vehicle on Oct. 12, 2026, introducing a 1,500-kilowatt charging architecture to the European passenger car market.

The Chinese automaker showcased the full-size vehicle at the 2026 Paris Motor Show. The model marks the brand's first European passenger vehicle engineered around its proprietary ultra-fast flash charging standard.

The sport utility vehicle carries a 115-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The pack delivers up to 653 kilometers of driving range on the WLTP European test cycle, the company said.

The vehicle draws direct-current power at peak rates reaching 1,500 kilowatts, or 1.5 megawatts. That throughput charges the 115-kilowatt-hour battery from 10% to 70% in five minutes at compatible commercial chargers.

Completing a charge from 10% to 97% capacity requires nine minutes under standard testing temperatures. The rapid fill-up mimics the dwell time of internal combustion refueling stops, the company said.

Low temperatures add three minutes to the charging curve. At minus 30 degrees Celsius, the battery replenishes from 20% to 97% capacity in 12 minutes, according to manufacturer technical specifications.

The vehicle connects to European charging hardware using a standard Combined Charging System Type 2 connector. BYD routes the 1,500-kilowatt electrical load through a single liquid-cooled cable, avoiding dual-plug configurations.

To prevent severe surges on local electrical grids, BYD integrates two-megawatt battery energy storage units at its charging hubs. The stationary batteries discharge during vehicle replenishment and recharge slowly from the grid.

The company plans to install 3,000 dedicated flash charging hubs across European motorway corridors by the end of 2027. Each station will house multiple high-voltage bays supported by stationary battery storage.

The automaker will offer two powertrain variants in European showrooms. The rear-wheel-drive Design trim uses a single electric motor delivering 462 horsepower, or 340 kilowatts, and accelerates to 100 kilometers per hour in eight seconds.

The higher-specification Excellence trim adds a front motor to provide all-wheel drive and 775 horsepower, or 570 kilowatts. That dual-motor configuration accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.6 seconds.

Maximum vehicle speed on the all-wheel-drive variant is electronically governed at 240 kilometers per hour. The performance matches premium European sport crossovers while accommodating seven adult passengers, the automaker said.

Exterior dimensions measure 5,040 millimeters in length, 1,996 millimeters in width and 1,760 millimeters in height. The vehicle sits on a 2,950-millimeter wheelbase, establishing a footprint comparable to full-size German luxury wagons.

A front luggage compartment provides 136 liters of cargo volume beneath the hood. The compartment opens through a double-tap exterior touch sensor, supplementing the rear cargo area which expands to 1,960 liters with rear seats folded.

The passenger cabin arranges seating across three rows in a two-three-two formation. The front two rows include power-adjustable seating equipped with heating, ventilation and massage mechanisms, according to company product specifications.

The dashboard integrates a 15.6-inch rotatable infotainment touchscreen connected to BYD's proprietary operating software. The vehicle also features a projection-activated motorized tailgate for hands-free cargo loading in roadside conditions.

The Atto 8 nameplate was used earlier in 2026 for plug-in hybrid utility vehicles in South Africa, Mexico and the Middle East. The European model is an entirely separate battery-electric design engineered for local tastes.

The flagship model sits at the top of BYD's European sport utility vehicle lineup. The range already includes the smaller Atto 2, Atto 3, Sealion 5, Seal U and Sealion 7 crossovers.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li introduced the vehicle at the Paris exposition. Li said the company designed the rapid charging system to eliminate highway range anxiety for long-distance family travel.

The nine-minute charging cycle directly challenges European automobile manufacturers. Skoda Auto's newly introduced Peaq electric sport utility vehicle requires 28 minutes to replenish its battery from 10% to 80% capacity at commercial fast chargers.

The system also intensifies competition against South Korean brands. Hyundai Motor Group sells the three-row Kia EV9 with a 99.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack that requires 24 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% under 350-kilowatt direct-current supply.

BYD utilizes lithium iron phosphate cell chemistry developed by its internal component division, FinDreams Battery. The chemistry eliminates nickel, cobalt and manganese cathodes, reducing dependence on expensive metals subject to volatile commodity pricing.

The second-generation Blade battery incorporates structural cell-to-body packaging. This manufacturing technique mounts prismatic battery cells directly into the chassis floor, increasing volumetric energy density while serving as a structural load-bearing member during collision impacts.

In-house cell manufacturing protects the company from battery supply bottlenecks that constrain rival European assembly plants. BYD manufactures its power electronics, traction motors and high-voltage wiring harnesses through domestic Chinese subsidiaries.

European commercial sales and initial customer deliveries will commence in the first quarter of 2027. Infrastructure deployment will concentrate along trans-European transport corridors, with 3,000 flash charging stations targeted for completion by Dec. 31, 2027.

BYD has not published country-by-country pricing for European markets, reserving retail announcements for early 2027. The company has also not disclosed finalized grid interconnection agreements or site lease contracts for its planned 3,000 charging locations.
