BYD reached 150,000 cumulative commercial new-energy vehicles produced on Oct. 26, cementing its expansion into heavy line-haul transport with its 600-kilowatt Q3 battery-electric tractor.

The milestone unit rolled off the assembly line at BYD Commercial Vehicle's intelligent manufacturing base in Huai'an, Jiangsu province. The plant integrates robotic welding, automated stamping and dedicated frame fabrication for heavy-duty freight platforms.

The production run caps an 18-year commercial vehicle effort that began with battery-electric transit buses in 2008. Commercial vehicles accounted for 53,032 units sold during the first nine months of 2026, up 28.46% year-on-year.

The Q3 heavy tractor deploys a dual-motor electric powertrain generating peak power of 600 kW, or approximately 816 horsepower. Rated continuous output reaches 400 kW, providing the torque required to move cargo across steep highway gradients.

The tractor operates on a 6x4 three-axle chassis configuration engineered for a gross combined weight of up to 49,000 kg. That 49-ton threshold matches the maximum legal limit for commercial freight transport across Chinese national highways.

Energy storage relies on BYD's proprietary lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery, configured specifically for commercial haulage cycles. Fleet operators select pack capacities of 400 kWh, 452 kWh or a long-range 600 kWh configuration.

A fully loaded Q3 tractor carrying a 49-ton combination achieves an operating range of approximately 325 km on a single charge. That radius covers regional hub-to-hub trunk routes operating between maritime container terminals and inland distribution yards.

Fast replenishment uses dual-gun direct-current charging terminals operating between 600A and 800A. The dual-cable setup recharges the traction battery from 20% to 80% state of charge in 30 minutes during scheduled driver shift turnovers.

BYD started developing electric freight trucks in 2012, initially deploying refuse collectors, terminal yard hostlers and urban delivery vans. The company assembled its 10,000th T5 light-duty electric truck in 2025, alongside the global release of its T4 cab-over delivery model.

The expansion directly challenges Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., known as CATL. CATL holds roughly 65% of China's heavy-truck battery installations, primarily through swappable battery-pack standards supplied to third-party truck assemblers.

Geely's commercial arm, Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group, controls roughly 20% of domestic electric heavy-duty truck sales. BYD counters rival chassis builders by supplying its own motors, inverters, electronic controls and Blade Battery cells.

The Huai'an manufacturing facility began operations in 2023 to supply commercial logistics corridors across eastern China. The factory uses flexible framing lines that alternate between heavy highway tractors, construction dump trucks and zero-emission concrete mixers.

BYD has exported commercial vehicles to more than 70 countries, although foreign revenue remains concentrated in municipal transit buses across Europe and Latin America. Heavy electric freight tractors represent the company's next phase of overseas industrial expansion.

Commercial fleet economics drive adoption as freight operators confront tightening municipal carbon disclosure standards. Diesel tractors burn roughly 35 liters of fuel per 100 km, while comparable electric units consume about 150 kWh of electricity across identical transit distances.

Long-haul electric trucking remains constrained by charging network availability along interprovincial expressways. High grid-interconnection fees and transformer substation constraints at highway service plazas continue to limit private fleet charging installations.

BYD will report full-year 2026 commercial vehicle sales volumes in January 2027, when Chinese logistics fleets complete their capital expenditure budgets for the upcoming transport cycle.

BYD has not published an official customer delivery notice for the milestone Q3 tractor, leaving unconfirmed whether the vehicle has commenced commercial fleet operations or remains at the manufacturing facility.
