## What to know

- 1.5 MW charging hardware refills 651 kWh battery in 20 minutes
- European e-truck fleet share reached 4.5% in Q1 2026 against 45% 2030 mandate
- Pilot corridor installations begin before Dec. 31, 2026 ahead of 2027 deliveries

BYD advanced its international rollout plan for commercial megawatt charging systems on Oct. 4, 2026, targeting European freight corridors with high-power infrastructure engineered to support long-haul battery-electric truck fleets.

The Chinese automaker is extending its high-voltage technology beyond passenger cars into heavy road logistics. In that sector, diesel tractors still move more than nine tenths of European overland freight tonnage.

At the core of the infrastructure push is a 1.5-megawatt charging architecture capable of delivering direct-current electricity at more than three times the speed of conventional high-power highway dispensers.

The system can recharge a massive 651-kilowatt-hour traction battery from 20% to 80% capacity in approximately 20 minutes, adding roughly 400 kilometers of driving range during a single stop.

Standard European Combined Charging System connectors capped at 420 kilowatts require roughly 60 minutes for that same charging window, tripling vehicle downtime for fleet operators.

The 20-minute turnaround fits directly within the mandatory 45-minute driving rest periods enforced across European Union motorways, allowing drivers to recharge without sacrificing statutory operating time.

BYD engineered the charging system to accompany its flagship ETT 44 tractor, a 44-metric-ton commercial prime mover developed from the ground up on a native battery-electric architecture.

The heavy truck runs on an 851.2-volt electrical system powered by lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery cells arranged directly in a structural cell-to-pack configuration.

The integrated powertrain delivers 743 metric horsepower of continuous rated output and reaches 1,000 horsepower at peak capacity, enabling the tractor to clear 25% highway inclines at gross weight.

Under fully laden motorway conditions, the tractor achieves a driving range of up to 600 kilometers per charge, according to vehicle specifications released by the manufacturer.

To support fleet adoption, BYD is structuring its commercial offering as a turnkey energy package rather than selling unbundled vehicles to third-party fleet operators.

The package bundles 1.5-megawatt dispensers with stationary battery energy storage units, proprietary microgrid energy management software and bespoke fleet financing arrangements.

The stationary battery storage units serve as localized power buffers, drawing electricity from local grids during off-peak hours to avoid overwhelming distribution substations during simultaneous multi-truck charging.

The commercial rollout lands directly in the home market of European heavy vehicle builders Daimler Truck, Volvo Group and Traton, which owns Scania and MAN.

Those manufacturers have invested billions of euros into proprietary electric platforms to comply with European Union fleet regulations requiring a 45% reduction in heavy-duty carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.

The European Union mandates escalate to a 90% emissions reduction by 2040, forcing freight operators to convert regional and long-distance diesel fleets to zero-emission powerplants.

Zero-emission models accounted for just 4.5% of European heavy truck registrations in the first quarter of 2026, according to data compiled by the International Council on Clean Transportation.

While sales grew 38% year on year during that quarter, the group estimates electric truck penetration must reach between 25% and 30% by 2030 to satisfy statutory climate targets.

The deployment intensifies competition over international high-voltage interface standards, pitching the Megawatt Charging System protocol promoted by the CharIN industry alliance against regional proprietary variants.

BYD equipped the ETT 44 with both Megawatt Charging System receptacles and standard European CCS2 ports, allowing trucks to use depot chargers when megawatt equipment is unavailable.

To address fleet concerns regarding battery cell degradation under continuous 1.5-megawatt charging loads, BYD attached a factory warranty covering 10 years or 1.2 million kilometers at 70% state of health.

The European corridor initiative builds on BYD's domestic infrastructure push in China, where the group detailed targets in March 2026 to erect 20,000 high-power flash charging stations.

BYD has signaled plans to manufacture heavy commercial vehicles within Europe over the long term, reducing exposure to future trade barriers and satisfying local content criteria.

The manufacturer already operates an electric bus and truck assembly plant in Komárom, Hungary, alongside two dedicated battery component production facilities in that country.

BYD plans to commence corridor charging demonstrations and pilot deliveries before Dec. 31, 2026, ahead of scheduled customer truck handovers in the second quarter of 2027.

BYD did not publish total capital expenditure budgets, individual depot site locations or country-by-country hardware delivery targets in its Oct. 4 disclosures.
